Aibu to be sick to death of the numbers one to ten?

milkwasabadchoice · 07/04/2015 09:46

I am just utterly bored with counting from one to fucking ten. Aargh!!!

Counting stones/steps/buttons/all other possible countable items; rocket blast off countdowns; hide and seek; giving countdowns before getting them out of bath/car/etc.

Don't even start me on counting songs. And sweet lord preserve me from number bonds or whatever they see called, when dd starts school.

Honestly if I never saw the numbers one to ten again I would be happy. I seem to have spent the while weekend saying wuuun toooo threeee fooour etc again. Eleven and upwards are ok, just about.

Just me? (Ok probably)

You are completely unreasonable and numberist

I am shocked to the core by your post

JustAQuicky · 07/04/2015 09:50

YNBU

At the moment 4&7 are the fav..

1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, we don't get to 10 Confused

JohnFarleysRuskin · 07/04/2015 09:51

Do it in French?

Heels99 · 07/04/2015 09:53

Your child is not even at school. They spend all reception doing 1-10 so I wouldn't bore yourself to tears with it now.

SomewhereIBelong · 07/04/2015 09:53

be a rebel and keep going when you get to 10....

milkwasabadchoice · 07/04/2015 09:55

I tried French for while. It palled. And can you even immmagine how pretentious I would sound playing le hide et le seek in the jardin. My neighbours would laugh their arses off - rightly.

Why not mix it up a bit with some words?

12345 once I caught a fish alive
678910 then I let it go again
Bla bla blah

1,2 buckle my shoe
3,4 knock on the door
Bla bla blah

felkov · 07/04/2015 10:04

you are limiting yourself OP!

Even boring old 1 2 3 sounds better in Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian etc or why not roman numerals, binary, prime numbers, Fibonacci sequence... can you tell my family is full of maths teachers Wink

Pico2 · 07/04/2015 10:06

They spend reception on 1-10? Surely even the children must have had enough of 1-10 by then.

ItsADinosaur · 07/04/2015 10:08

So are the children who know their numbers before reception bored then? Genuine question.

milkwasabadchoice · 07/04/2015 10:10

Fibonacci? Shudder. Actual maths terrifies me - so maybe instead of ranting I should be grateful that it's only counting and not bodmas or whatever.

KeturahLee · 07/04/2015 10:12

Don't worry, Reception is 1-20, addition, subtraction, halving and doubling so they won't get bored. Lots of children start Reception not counting to 10 and not recognising numbers though!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 07/04/2015 10:14

Kids are expected to know 1-10 (counting and recognition) before Reception class. They learn them at pre-school and home prior. The kids who learn them at Reception level are the ones who havent been taught them by their parents.

OP I feel your pain on the numbers front but it wont be long and the numbers will be in the bag and itll be on to letters. At least there are 26 of them so it should spice things up a bit.

ItsADinosaur · 07/04/2015 10:15

Oh I'm sure there are. That's good, was just wondering.

ItsADinosaur · 07/04/2015 10:16

Yes my 3 year old does know them, hence my question (without trying to sound like I'm bragging, I'm not).

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 07/04/2015 10:21

Grin dont worry it doesnt sound like bragging, more just checking that therell be something for him at reception - im glad you asked as I wanted to know what was next too.

cosytoaster · 07/04/2015 10:31

Enjoy it while you can....the years fly by and soon, like me, you'll be 'helping' with GCSE maths and wishing for the simpler days of 1 - 10!

icklekid · 07/04/2015 10:40

thinkivebeenhacked I think it depends on where you live - a large number of children start our school unable to speak let alone count to 10 (nursery not reception ) to say we expect them to count to 10 would be unfair!

KeturahLee · 07/04/2015 10:43

Counting objects to 10 and beyond and recognising numerals are Reception activities Think. Most children will be reciting numbers to 10 and sometimes matching numerals and quantity by 50 months, but some kids will already be in school by 50 months.

It's not really a case of "not being taught by parents" - children develop at different rates and some just aren't interested in numbers before 4.

AndHarry · 07/04/2015 10:55

At least you have a reasonable range. Try playing hide and seek with a toddler who only knows " eighhhhht, niiiiiiine, TEN! Ready not, 'ere I come!" I should sue her for personal injuries from throwing myself under/around furniture in the three seconds allowed Hmm
