To paint my sitting room red?

Just that really. I love strong colours and the room needs to be redecorated. It has a teal chimney breast which I would like to keep - or it could go to make way for the red?

Our previous house had a red dining room when we moved in. I remember going for a viewing on a November morning and the owner had fairy lights and candles; I loved how she had embraced the dark instead of trying to fake 'light and airy.' Sadly, the room also had a thin white stripe going around it, a 'go faster strip' exh called it, so we redecorated, but I have always wanted a red room ever since.

Sitting room gets morning sun, but now the playroom (South facing) is full of sun and this room just a bit dull - I want it red!

Anyone got this, or is it just too much?

Go for it if that's what you like.

My friend even got a red sofa but has white and red wallpaper. Looks really nice.

EveBoswell · 06/04/2015 15:20

Darker colours make a room look smaller.

Apart from that, are you planning a secret murder and the blood splashes won't be found?

ComposHatComesBack · 06/04/2015 15:22

Red front rooms I find very overpowering and I like a bold colour in a sitting room. It is also difficult to escape the knocking shop/abattoir vibe with all that red about.

Jelliebabe1 · 06/04/2015 15:23

Just do it! Its you house do what you like! I really don't understand the need to ask!

Cantbelievethisishappening · 06/04/2015 15:24

YANBU but make sure you are happy with the shade of red. Like the idiot that I am I did my daughter's room based on a little sample pot daubing on the wall and it looked awful once the whole room was done. Had to have it all re-done.

IamtheDuchessstill · 06/04/2015 15:27

I am just rubbish at making decisions, Jellie and used to sharing them with ex - now it will be only my fault if it looks terrible Smile. I just want people to come on and say "oooh I have that and I love it, and here is a pic... " Smile.

I had made up my mind to go mustard to go with the teal, but a friend says the tester looks like baby poo smeared on the wall, and that has put me off a little...

I'd go for something warm and dark but less oppressive than red (like terracotta or burgundy) then add red with accessories eg red sofa throw, red rugs, red artwork on walls. Red can look a bit cheap and tacky on walls, and could get overpowering in summer.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 06/04/2015 15:32

I wouldn't like it, but it's only paint.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 06/04/2015 15:32

I recently went from a house where every room was cream with neutral colours to coloured rooms and i love it, the house feels much warmer. Seemed like i went to everyone's house and they all looked the same so when it needed done i thought sod it i will try something different. My rooms red, the kids rooms, ones pink and the other one's blue, the bathrooms dark purple, living rooms pale green and the kitchens yellow and grey. The whole house was the same shade cream with accessories before. Red is a hard colour though so i would get a few testers first which is what i done in bedroom as they dry completely different to the colour charts/tin.

Nydj · 06/04/2015 15:36

try it on a wall and if you don't like it, you can always paint over it.

longestlurkerever · 06/04/2015 15:44

Red is the one colour I don't really like on walls. Would prefer deep blue or purple if going bold. But it's not my house so ignore me! Red and white stripes as previously mentioned sounds good.

starburst1979 · 06/04/2015 15:45

I have red brick and dark wood, looks very cosy imo Smile
Excuse the clutter!!

If you like it then it doesn't really matter, does it? I'd advise against of you're selling but if you are repainting to your own taste for your own enjoyment then just do it. It's your home Smile

honeysucklejasmine · 06/04/2015 15:47

I had one. Now it's white and I much prefer it.

AliMonkey · 06/04/2015 15:52

We have red chimney breast and cream everywhere else (plus red curtains) which I love. Would have gone for red everywhere if had been brave enough. Works as long as it's a relatively bright room (ie big enough windows) and not too tiny

IcaMorgan · 06/04/2015 15:54

My last place had 3 walls red with a feature wall on the 4th and here the red is the feature wall (used the leftover wallpaper from the last place). Both look really good but needs a big room with lots of windows

DisappointedOne · 06/04/2015 16:01

A friend painted her knocked-through living room hot pink, floor to ceiling. She found herself angry to the point of rage most days when she'd usually been quite calm (but energetic). Stopped as soon as she painted the room a calming mint green instead but boy was that 18 months hard work for the rest of us

Greenrememberedhills · 06/04/2015 16:03

Try print room yellow or yellow ground from Farrow and ball for a colour you might like and which is not like poo!

26Point2Miles · 06/04/2015 16:06

Dulux and crown both have good offers on paint in B&Q atm.... I work in paint and red is popular! 2 crown for £20 and in dulux it's 2for £22

CapnMurica · 06/04/2015 16:10

You could pair the teal with some gold and navy? This is what I'm planning, with pink and purple pillows. Sounds too much but there was a pic in the Asda book which I have fallen in love with!

Just do the chimney breast red and leave everything else white or cream or whatever. You'll get the illusion of cosy but it will also not make the place too dark. You can go cosier by adding curtains, rug, throws etc. without losing light.

RubyReins · 06/04/2015 16:11

We have a red bedroom with a neutral ceiling and a very dark blue sitting room with a pale blue/grey ceiling and gold curtains - Victorian flat so the rooms are big and ceilings are very high which helps. We have loads of artwork and pictures on the walls too. Works well. I researched the colours first so that they were appropriate to the period of the building. I adore bright and strong colours in rooms, my parents live in what feels like a sea of white emulsion and I really dislike it. Go for it - it's only paint!

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 06/04/2015 16:17

Go for it! As Ruby says, it's only paint!

In our old flat, we had a lovely room painted deep red beneath a gold painted dado rail, and a sort of vivid yellow above the rail. It looked brilliant, with opulent looking futon and lovely African printed throws. The floor was white floorboards, and lots of rugs. all pre dd, quite un child friendly!
Wouldn't be to everyone's taste of course, but I thought it was great!

championnibbler · 06/04/2015 16:25

i'd hate it.
i've seen similar before and i think it looks cheap.
but it's your room so do what you fancy.

elbowsdontsing2 · 06/04/2015 16:27

i painted one of my rooms red its like letter box red and it looks really warm and cosy. when the sun shines through the window it gives off a glow like when the suns setting. go for it op you wont regret it
