to want to do something nice with my dad's money

I inherited quite a bit of money from my dad. at the time I was 6 months pregnant and still living at home. ( baby is now 6 months old ) The money has helped me put a deposit on a house for which we get the keys to on Wednesdays Grin Grin Grin
we have also enough money to get it furnished and decorated.

recently more money came from the estate which was unexpected 5 grand to be exact and I really want to go on holiday with it but DP want to keep it incase we need it while I'm still on maternity. I don't want to use it all for a holiday just something cheap and last minute when the kids have gone back to school.

I know this makes sense and is sensible but my dad loved his holidays and so much of the money I was given has been used sensibly

AIBU to want a holiday ??

No Yanquis but nor is your dh bu to want to keep it for a Rainey day.

Anyway to compromise?

How about half and half?
For 2.5k you could have an amazing holiday out of school holidays.
Kuoni and Hayes and Jarvis have some great last minute offers in some beautiful places.

CycleChic · 06/04/2015 06:45

No you're not :) sadly, neither is your dh. Does he realise that you wouldn't blow it all on a holiday? Do you know how many months living expenses that would cover? Do you have a rainy day fund?
Tell him that 1k is for a holiday, and the rest is for saving :)

ihatethecold · 06/04/2015 06:46

In all fairness the op has put a deposit down on a house. Plus extra.

Do what makes you happy op.

SpringBreaker · 06/04/2015 06:46

You can get a nice holiday for 1k in the canaries, and that would cover everything, and there will be 4k left to use as savings

However it's your money and I do hope your partner is equally contributing to things too, or certainly putting a fair amount in. If not then I hope you have ensured things are in place to make sure if anything goes wrong he can't walk away with half of everything that you have paid for.

tobytomcat88 · 06/04/2015 06:47

Yes he knows i won't spend it all and we have saved enough to cover all bills I only have 3 months mat leave left

ohhhh I hate the c word .... compromise ha

I second the ring option. Buy something nice and frivolous that you can remember him by. It wouldn't make a dent in the £5k at all.

Slutbucket · 06/04/2015 09:51

I've been in the same position! I booked a trip to New York as me and DH had a running joke with my dm that she should pay for us to go!! When she died I did it and had an amazing time and it lifted my spirits. I know my mum would have been pleased for me and I remember that trip fondly. I also bought a piano.

shewept · 06/04/2015 09:59

Neither are being unreasonable. Compromise is needed.

CycleChic · 06/04/2015 09:59

Sounds like he's being overly cautious! send him a postcard from wherever you and the baby go Grin
