To think that fake tan always looks awful.

I'm naturally very fair skinned. For years I've been told I'm too pale, that I look ill, that I resemble a milk bottle etc. All because I've resisted the urge to smother myself in fake tan! I can't tan naturally because I just burn, so fake tanning has always been the other option but I think it looks bloody awful. It's not the same a natural tan no matter what anyone says, fake tan always looks orange, streaky and unnatural. It always looks dirty and leaves a mess on towels and bed clothes etc, Plus it stinks! Oh and it's a complete faff to put on, I just couldn't be arsed with all of that exfoliating bollocks beforehand.

Why do so many women still smother themselves in that shit?

Right, can anyone recommend one for pale legs???
The Clarins lady said their gradual tan is good ( but she would!)

prawnballs · 04/04/2015 10:36

Depends on the brand and who applies it.
Some people look great but I however, look like I need dipped in bleach and a bloody good scrub - I'm far too impatient!

Charlotte3333 · 04/04/2015 10:41

I use St Tropez tanning dry oil mixed with nivea moisturiser. It's not orange or streaky, just sort of glowy and makes me look healthier than I do in my natural state. I also use those latex gloves to apply it so I don't get funny coloured palms, and nobody would ever know I was wearing it unless I admitted to it.

The whole orange-skin thing is repellent. A tan should just look like you've had a few days in Nice.

VirginiaWoofs · 04/04/2015 10:54

I use it and look natural but then I've got very lightly tanned skin anyway so I think I can get away with it more

Trills · 04/04/2015 10:59

Your friends don't sound very nice.

RoboticSealpup · 04/04/2015 11:32

I'm pale like you and fake tan doesn't work for me either. I even look weird in "fair" tinted moisturiser in winter. It just looks like a layer of grubby gunk on top of my almost transparent skin. An almost any foundation looks orange on me.

The only thing that does work is one of those bronzers with a bit of shimmer in it. I have one that's got "stripes" in different colours, from pink to bronze with cream and peach in between. It works because it doesn't cover up the skin or make it a different colour. If I don't use too much I actually look tanned and healthy, even though I'm not any darker as such, just a warmer hue.

Try it.

Aridane · 04/04/2015 11:43

Applied well, you would've even notice it- person just looks well. A bit like Botox and fillers, you only notice the bad jobs...

flora717 · 04/04/2015 12:46

Having a bit of a chortle at those thinking there is a good fake tan. I've had to leave a room when people were cooing over someone's "amazing" fake tan. Still obvious with natural light and usually under artificial light.
It's to do with the UV light (not) absorbed, OK we humans can't see it. But we can see enough of a clue.

SevenEleven · 04/04/2015 12:52

Hate these bloody threads slagging people off for their choices. What do you care if people want to apply loads of fake tan and look orange? I'd rather sit next to them on the train than a judgemental moaner going on and on about what they deem acceptable on other people's bodies.

legolegolego · 04/04/2015 13:01

I've got fake tan on now and I'm very pale normally. Someone once told me to not buy the 'fair' stuff because it's got more orange tones in it. You are better buying the dark stuff and using less. I probably don't look naturally tanned but I don't think I look orange or stripey.....

ifgrandmahadawilly · 04/04/2015 13:02

Ugh, hate the march of the orange people. Grim. Well done you for resisting.

It's so funny when you watch tv from the 70's - 90's and you see how less orange people were back then!

UghReally · 04/04/2015 13:06

Legolegolego-Can you PM me the brand you use? Looks pretty awesome tbh and i've been looking for a new brand to use since my local superdrug discontinued the one i use...
completely misses point of thread *

legolegolego · 04/04/2015 13:08

Will do!

Theycallmemellowjello · 04/04/2015 13:12

Agree with pps - it's def something you don't notice when it's done well. It annoys me quite a lot when people go on about how fake tans/Botox/cosmetic surgery etc always looks terrible. It so obviously is logically impossible to prove (unless you ask everyone if you've had something done) that I feel it's just motivated by a snobby dislike of 'unnatural' cosmetic procedures.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/04/2015 13:12

Legolego... you don't look stripey or orange, looks good on you. It wouldn't on me.

Emerald... I'm the same colouring as you, super-pale and it doesn't look good on me either. The way you've written your post though is very judgemental and perhaps you are either prickly in RL or you just want a bunfight?

Orange isn't a good colour on anybody really IMO but there's no need to be so nasty with your 'always' and 'everyone'. You sound like my mum. I'm going to see her in a bit and trying to prolong the inevitable.

WhatWouldBlairWaldorfDo · 04/04/2015 13:12

Im always fake tanned, im not orange or streaky! I just look like ive got a bit of colour.
If people use it right you dont even know they are using it, as pp said you only notice bad tans!

Dont judge all of us just because you know people who cant apply tan for shit

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 04/04/2015 13:14

...

Just kidding.

legolegolego your arm looks lovely. (As do your floors).

I'm also very pale and it just makes me look like I need a bath!

Grin

I think you just notice the bad ones. Like with anything, I suppose. I have seen a few orange people walking about, though.

To think that fake tan always looks awful.
Spotifymuse · 04/04/2015 13:20

I'm milk bottle pale and a wear a subtle dove or Johnsons tinted body lotion in the summer and I'm bloody gorgeous. Biscuit

StillLostAtTheStation · 04/04/2015 13:23

I'm very pale and lather myself in factor 50 or 60 if there is any possibility of a tan.

legolegolego · 04/04/2015 13:23

Spotify Grin

glorymorning · 04/04/2015 13:29

If you don't like it then don't wear it.

If women want to wear it then they can.

Are you upset about insulted about pale? Does that give you the right to shame the women that decide to wear it?

I think anyone who feels it's ok to shame another person for the choices they make about their own appearance are just nasty individuals.

Dumpylump · 04/04/2015 13:36

I don't do my own fake tan, I get spray ones done at my friends salon... As many other posters have already said, you only notice the bad ones.
I'm probably as pale as OP naturally - green eyed celt here - but just a couple of weeks ago a casual acquaintance remarked on how I'm "naturally dark" while we were chatting at school gates about which colours suit us. I just smiled Grin

MrsBigginsPieShop · 04/04/2015 13:38

Yabu. A professional Sienna X tan can look very good. Plus ís up to other women what they choose to do

MagicMojito · 04/04/2015 13:43

On the few occasions I've tried fake tan I have always looked bloody awful. I end up with lots of teeny tiny dark speckles all over my legs. I am however very corpse like in complexion!

Fake tan IF APPLIED CORRECTLY can actually give you a really healthy, natural looking glow. You just need to make sure you get the right tone and do the necessary prep work before hand.

MagicMojito · 04/04/2015 13:44

Oh yabu.
