AIBU to think that Easter Sunday lunch is a traditional thing?

I think a roast dinner (lamb, obviously, even if summer lamb is better than spring) is a normal tradition on Easter Sunday. DH thinks this is madness and the only tradition is chocolate.

Who's right? Is it an aberration to skip the lunch or to have it? I have to cook it so it's me making the effort but it would just feel a bit sad not to have a family dinner that day.

We're not religious and won't be going to church, but come from Christian backgrounds so it's those festivals we make most point of marking, although I'll have a go at doing the food traditions of pretty much any national day or religious festival.

Mum does minted lamb for every holiday but christmas.

It's my favourite and should be tradition

grovel · 03/04/2015 16:16

Turkey here.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 03/04/2015 16:17

It depends what you grew up with, surely? But yes, lamb roast dinner is certainly a common Easter tradition. You're making me wish I'd gone home for Easter now, there's no way in hell I'm cooking it myself.

flora717 · 03/04/2015 16:17

Maundy Thursday is roast lamb in my tradition. Hot cross buns on Friday and whatever on Sunday. You can make your own traditions :-)

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2015 16:18

Judging by what I've just seen in Morrisons, it's very much traditional, especially turkey.

We're having beef but then again, we have Sunday lunch every Sunday because it's traditional Grin

SauvignonBlanche · 03/04/2015 16:19

I'm planning on chocolate for breakfast and lunch then roast lamb for dinner. Easter Grin

BuzzardBird · 03/04/2015 16:19

We have a Sunday roast dinner every Sunday and to make it more special for Easter DD will decorate table and we will have rib of beef. Easter Smile

CalleighDoodle · 03/04/2015 16:20

Most definitely lamb. We celebrate new life and all things spring ny eating new spring life...

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 03/04/2015 16:23

Traditional in this house, we always have turkey at Easter.

I always do a roast on Sunday anyway but the table will be decorated with chicks, eggs and what-not.

drbonnieblossman · 03/04/2015 16:24

Traditionally it's lamb and chocolate but we don't eat lamb so have duck. Because they're sort of Spring-like!

Moln · 03/04/2015 16:28

Definitely lamb is the traditional meat of choice. However as only two of us like it we've duck (evidently a very logical alternative eh drbonnie)

Chocolate though is also an important tradition that should not be overlooked.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/04/2015 16:33

We have a Quorn Roast or Linda Mc pies.
Easter Sunday Dinner is the same as Christmas Dinner minus the sprouts Grin

Pudding has to be something lemony or almondy Easter Wink

ShebaRabbit · 03/04/2015 16:37

Defo roast dinner is traditional. We're having salmon, then rib of beef and all the trimmings and the most disgustingly luscious desert I could think of, choc cherry brownies, nigellas coffee ice cream and her choc peanut sauce.
Later on I forsee I shall be nibbling on a Rennie or two.

TwoOddSocks · 03/04/2015 16:49

I never grew up with that tradition and nor did many of my friends at the time, we'd just exchange easter eggs and get to gorge on chocolate all day. That said my DH always did the roast, easter bunny hiding eggs around the house thing when he was little and I'm definitely going to go with that tradition. Who doesn't love a roast dinner?

sooperdooper · 03/04/2015 16:57

I've never considered it a big thing, think it's more my family though, Easter was/is a nice long weekend but no particular traditions except the odd chocolate egg

We're going to the pub on Easter sunday, not a roast dinner in sight

JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/04/2015 16:58

I would say it's traditional, yes. Has to be lamb, for us.

SirChenjin · 03/04/2015 16:59

We've never really 'done' an Easter roast of any description - it's always just been Easter eggs.

DidoTheDodo · 03/04/2015 17:01

Not particularly traditional. Probably just a good time to see friends/family with a long weekend.
No lamb for us ( too cute to eat!)

FixItUpChappie · 03/04/2015 17:02

We want to do a big brunch as our tradition and have invited my parents and SIL for one this Sunday. We'll do an egg hunt, grand tea party type brunch with little cakes and assorted bits....then I always set out pudding painting for my young ones.

to me it sounds very nice and relaxed but my mom is put off now that we don't also want to go to theirs for a big ham dinner Sad

AChickenCalledKorma · 03/04/2015 17:03

Definitely roast lamb - have never come across turkey on Easter Sunday.

Lamb for spring time and new life ... and because it is the traditional Jewish passover meal and Easter and passover are inextricably linked (the last supper was the Passover meal shared by Jesus and his disciples).

Also simnel cake, Easter biscuits, hot cross buns, iced cookies shaped like eggs/chicks and as much chocolate as you can handle Grin.

BackforGood · 03/04/2015 17:04

No more so than any other Sunday - growing up, my Mum would cook a roast for 'Sunday Dinner' every weekend.
We don't. As such, we don't necessarily have a roast for Easter, In fact, over past few years, both dh and the dc have usually been camping (being a 4 day weekend) so it's not worth it just for me!

Each family have to make their own 'traditions', same as at Christmas - it's unlikely your family and your partner / dh's family all traditionally do the same things at Christmas.

Jollyphonics · 03/04/2015 17:04

I've never heard of having a special Easter Sunday dinner at all

DuchessDisaster · 03/04/2015 17:05

We always had roast lamb for lunch on Easter Sunday. After church, which is way out of fashion now.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 03/04/2015 17:07

Simnel cake is for Mothering Sunday with us.

Wow, this thread is making me hungry!

Crikeyblimey · 03/04/2015 17:07

Yep - lamb roast dinner here. Links to the Paschal Lamb and all that.
