"Classic" tv shows, books and films-why bother remaking them for a new audience? Yes I'm looking at you Thunderbirds.

And the new Cinderella and the modern Famous Five.
I know today's generation would probably find the originals wobbly and amateurish, but then why bother? (I know, to make money) It rarely works, (Dr Who being the exception),alienates those who grew up with them, the target audience probably have no reference point from the originals and just comes across as a cynical marketing ploy.
All came about as the new cgi animated Thunderbirds looks awful. (But I bet the toys are in the shops already)
Sorry for grumpy old gimmer rant. [fbuangry]

I agree - my son is 3 and LOVES the original Thunderbirds, but didn't even recognise it as the same programme when we tried to show him the new one. He was insistent that it wasn't even 'like' Thunderbirds and I had to agree.

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/04/2015 14:15

If you include the film this would be the 3rd (i think) remake.

KatieKaye · 03/04/2015 14:21

New Thunderbirds?? Where please?

(Am od enough to have watched the original first time around. And didn't realilse they were puppets. Twas a sad day when I finally twigged I'd never be able to marry Alan)

KatieKaye · 03/04/2015 14:22

that should have been "am OLD enough".
But maybe ODD is more apt

dreamingofblueskies · 03/04/2015 14:29

I read my son the original Famous Five recently and the sexist (girls doing all the housework) and racist (mainly aimed at gypsies) views of the time surprised me, and 'Aunt Fanny' and them having a 'gay' time or a man looking 'queer' made him giggle. (He's 10 which is why he knows the more modern meaning of these terms!)

But I don't think they need to remake them, as long as you accept that they are very much of their time you can still enjoy the originals.

2boys2girls · 03/04/2015 15:27

Scooby doo is the worst
I mean shaggy and Thelma , Fred and Daphne what's as all that about ,

StrawberryTot · 03/04/2015 15:38

I totally see where you are coming from OP as I loved Thunderbirds and Scooby Doo as a kid. But I know someone who worked on the new series of Thunderbirds, he's an awesome guy and he put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it. So I appreciate and admire it on a whole different level.

Although I thought Cinderella was a lovely film and Kate Blanchett was amazing as the step mother, it was basically the same as every version, where as the new Malificient had a new lease of life yet keeping the original at heart.

LifeHuh · 03/04/2015 16:19

Hmm. I think it depends very much on the book/ show you are remaking.Thunderbirds possibly, Poldark yes Smile, Famous Five - no. Because The Famous Five is basically a series about children having adventures, and IMO if you want a TV series about a gang if children having adventures in the present, you need to write that series, not faff around altering something set in another time period.
And is it Sherlock that DH watches ? Set now and Watson is a woman? What's that all about - if that is the series you want to make for heavens sake have the courage of your convictions and make it, but don't pretend it is something else. Definitely grumpy here today!!

VoteForAlanBstard · 03/04/2015 17:46

My 4 year old DD loves the original Thunderbirds (and plays with my old toys which makes me happy!) but I cant see her enjoying the new botoxed version.

BalloonSlayer · 03/04/2015 18:00

How come you've all seen it? I thought it wasn't on till Saturday?

EastMidsMummy · 03/04/2015 18:17

VELMA, not Thelma. Rage

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 03/04/2015 18:24

YABU - the original Thunderbirds is unutterable shite and why anyone would enjoy it non-ironically (with a strong helping of drugs) is beyond me.

Also YABU because without remakes we wouldn't have Paddington the Movie, the Cary Grant version of His Girl Friday and the American Office.

2boys2girls · 03/04/2015 19:22

Omg Velma sorry sorry sorry lol

TrulyTurtles · 03/04/2015 19:34

Of course it was shite, but in 1960 something it wasn't.
And for every His Girl Friday you get a Nicholas cage Wicker Man PLUS Gus Van Sant's Psycho.

And you can keep Alan Katie, it was Captain Scarlett for me.

2boys2girls

Thelma was Velma's marine biologist aunt.

Because three year olds rarely have access to their own dealer, or indeed a ready supply of irony. Grin

We have recently started on Stingray, and since realising that Troy Tempest was based on James Garner, I have moment where I almost forget he's a puppet...

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 04/04/2015 13:20

Stingray is more acceptable mainly because of the enigmatic Marina
