To think this can't be normal - dentist related

Dh broke a tooth last week and had treatment to sort it out in Monday.
He had an injection to numb the whole area and then apparently they 'clamped' his tongue out of the way. At the time of course he couldn't feel it but when he got back he showed me where the clamp had been. It had broken the skin quite badly and left a cut about 2cm long.

It's Friday now and dh is struggling to eat. All along the original cut is ulcerated and his tongue is swollen. He can't sleep because it hurts so much and is taking strong pain killers before attempting to eat anything at all. He said it's like having a huge really bad ulcer.

Is this normal? I've never had a filling so don't know and with it being a broken tooth the dentist had to repair maybe it's different. It's really nasty though and was bleeding a little again this morning.

Not ime. I would be calling doctors and getting seen, ulcers suggest an infection which could be nasty as there are lots of blood vessels in the tongue and then put a formal complaint with pictures in writing to the dentist

We've taken photos as dh has to go back to the dentist in a couple of weeks for some x-rays. We'd have to go to ooh today I guess. I did wonder if it might require antibiotics. It's really nasty. The tooth is fine!

It seems it is a thing but looks awful!

I've had tonnes of dental treatment including having my tongue clamped, or rather pushed, to one side. Leaving him with open cuts is absolutely not normal, and I'd go add far as to say it's sub standard practise. I'd call the dentist back and ask to see someone immediately and ask to speak to the practise manager as well. The main problem is that it is bank holiday weekend of course.

When he came home there was blood all over his teeth. It always looks awful I suppose as a small amount of blood in your mouth always looks a lot but it is nasty. There's one large cut and then like a thin long line away from it.
I think if it keeps on bleeding we will have to pop to ooh. Although will they say it's a dental matter? It's not bleeding heavily but I'm more worried that it's swollen and might be an infection.

The clamp thing looks awful in that link! Doesn't mention injuries from it though!

I've never had this but had an x ray a few weeks ago and it dug in to the top and bottom of my mouth and was sore for a week after

No,I've had a tooth removed that was broken. It was done in the hospital,my tongue was never clamped and I had no pain afterwards.

Fluffyears · 03/04/2015 10:34

I had two wisdom teeth surgically removed three weeks ago and I didn't need my tongue clamped, never had it for a filling either, very odd. I'd call the dentist to look at the injury, they can give AB's

shoofly · 03/04/2015 10:42

I would call the dentist - they will be able to prescribe the appropriate abs and I would want them to see it

Oldraver · 03/04/2015 11:20

Looking at that link it doesn't look like an actual clamp but a device to isolate the tooth and push the tongue to one side.

I would say its unfortunate to have an injury to his tongue....as he was numb maybe they cut it with their instruments ?

I had a broken toothout and something was put in my mouth..it took ages to geit it out as they had to cut into the bone..at the end my mouth had split at the side from all the pressure, very sore

I would get him to return and show them the damage

I had a GA for tooth removal, and my bottom lip had been clearly clamped open. I had a massive cut which turned in to an ulcer right inside my lower lip. It was agony, eating was so painful etc.

I got something called iglu, which had a massive improvement on the ulcer in just 24 hours.

Get some medical advice though. But the above stuff was fan for coating it so it had a chance to start healing.
