To give calpol before he's two months old

DS1 is two months in a weeks time.

He's in so much pain teething it's breaking my heart and the teething granules are just about working but not long lasting. his gums are bleeding where he's scratched them from putting his fists in and I'm feeling like there's nothing I can do.

would you give calpol even though it's for 2 months plus?
fwiw he was 2 weeks late

oh and born with a tooth so yes it's definitely teething!

A baby can have 2.5 ml of calpol for first vaccinations. I suggest you talk to your gp as I am not sure that calpol every night is safe at that age.

That age is difficult. Your baby may well have colic or reflux. A chat with the health visitor might be a good idea.

Ok...thanks. I don't know if any HVs are around tomorrow being a bank holiday but I'll try and phone.

Thanks for replying x

You could talk to a pharmacist. They often know more about medicines than GPs. There will be an out of hours chemist open somewhere.

I remember this stage.
It's hard Flowers

I think I'm going to give a half dose tonight and speak to someone in the morning. no late pharmacies anywhere that I can see from Mr Google and I'm going with trusting my instincts on this one. judge away if I'm doing the wrong thing...I just hate seeing him in pain Sad

We had a lot of success with teething tablets. I used Hylands, if those are available to you. What about a frozen washcloth or ice on the gums? I know advice is against oragel now, but I used it with all three kids with no issues. I think the natural version is fine.

Calpol is safe for neonates and infants but you have to get the dose right.

15mg per kilo is the dose we use. Assuming 4kg (8 weeks old) that would be 60mg.

Calpol for infants is usually 120mg in 5ml, so 2.5ml or a half teaspoon measure would be 60mg.

It's very important that you do the maths right as the older calpol is a different strength and small mistakes can lead to overdoses which are dangerous.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/04/2015 03:07

Well....we use it. And we're pretty sure it's safe. But last time I looked it was still off licence in under 2 months, so the pharmacist is unlikely to be allowed to tell you... Please be 100% certain on the strength of the calpol, and the maths (as per Hic above). And that young, I wouldn't want to give it for very long, or more often than once every 6 hours.

MrsCK · 03/04/2015 03:12

Thanks all. He is 4kg and the strength I've got is the infant one which recommends 2.5mg and I certainly wouldn't give more than one dose within the next 24 hours.

Although whilst I've been dithering he seems to have exhausted himself to sleep...I'll try and just use the granules for now but thank you so much hic for the working out of what you use. if I do need to use it tonight I'll double check how much it's got per 5mg and base the dosage on that.
I hope my hv is around tomorrow!

Try anbesol over the counter from a chemist
We have it for ds but I used it when I had a tooth ache and it was fab!
It's liquid so can be applied by hand or using a cotton bud, cotton bud is good for babies as they bite down on it and squeeze more liquid out
Hope he stays settled
My ds is having some sort of all night partyShock
