70s or 80s? which decade committed the biggest crimes against fashion?

butterfly2015 · 02/04/2015 00:41

I was a teenager in the 80s. I have photos of me wearing pedal pushers, puffball skirts and wearing far to many ribbons in my very perked hair.

Having just watched some show on the 70s and witnessed men wearing pink (dp says it's salmon not pink) flares and spangly shirts I actually think the 70s was far worse and I had a lucky escape (as anything pre 1980 I can blame on my mother buying for me)

'Fess up. What's your worst fashion disaster and am I right? Are the 70s the worst decade in terms of "style"?

Knicker jumper, love it!

Inkanta · 03/04/2015 12:04

You could have your knickers underneath the body Easter Blush

butterfly2015 in that 70's disco segment yhe woman singjng 'I love the night life' lookec like Pat Butcher, I had to do a double takeShock.

Those marvellous tight white trousers worn by the Bee Gees, ouch!

emotionsecho · 03/04/2015 15:12

Oh yes Saucy that is a true skill on the part of the legend Errol. Do you, or does anyone else, remember his song 'Brother Louie'? I am sure it was him and can remember hearing it and thinking what a sad and powerful song it was.

cosytoaster · 03/04/2015 15:35

Great post Danglee - totally agree, everything much more middle of the road now.

As for bodies - it was a total bugger to do them back up in the loo (esp after a few cinzanos), the poppers never seemed to fit together again.

woodhill · 03/04/2015 15:52

I think the 70s were worse with long dresses, tiered skirts and hideous patterns.

mind you the worse hairstyle was the 80s mullet and those "baggies"

emotionsecho · 03/04/2015 16:11

What about when the bodies unpopped all of their own accord and sort of sprung up or, even worse, just kind of gathered in your jeans?!

emotionsecho · 03/04/2015 16:32

A veritable feast of big hair on that 80's compilation butterflyGrin

StrawberryTot · 03/04/2015 16:38

I was born in the mid 80's so have little recollection of it and obviously none of the 70's but looking back Id definitely say the 80's! Shoulder pads *mega cringe, but on the other hand the 80's rocked the metal scene Grin

HelenaDove · 03/04/2015 18:12

Was born in 73 so grew up mostly in the 80s but i really like the new twist on 70s fashion ........I wont be doing bright orange lipstick though. Coral is a better alternative for lips IMO.

I watched a bit of "Ashes to Ashes" , the fashions in that were pure 80s .
Need to watch it now.............

80s fashion was the best.
I saw a blazer with turnbacked cuffs (stripey cuffs) and rejoiced. DD was Hmm

dontcallmelen · 03/04/2015 18:50

Teen of the 70's here, thought I was the height of sophstication with my cream trouser suit/brown blouse with huge pointed collar/trilby hat/brown n cream platform shoes, had a 'feather cut' a 'purdeycut' farah fawcett flicks, was always experimenting with my hair, never allowed too dye it, used too get the Toners sachets from boots, remember also saving up my wages from saturday job, too buy massive snakeskin wedges from Shellys in Oxford St, my dd constantly bemoans the loss of all those wedges/platforms/sky scrapper heels as we have the same size feet

manchestermummy · 03/04/2015 19:32

Primary school child of the 80s. There was a school uniform but noone really wore it. My favourite school combo was:

  • Cream blouse tucked into
  • A green cord skirt
  • Pink legwarmers

And underneath, to keep warm:

A full dress slip.

I was nine.

My shell suit was olive green, pink and purple, and my favourite party dress was the black one with the stripey attached blouse and the braces.

HelenaDove · 03/04/2015 19:41

len my mum has a huge white ottoman in her bedroom which is stuffed to the brim with 60s and 70s vintage clothes . I know because she told me but i havent actually seen whats in there because shes got junk piled on top of the ottoman

However ive lost weight recently and two weeks ago she said anything i want i can have. I will skip the 60s minis though. Smile

dontcallmelen · 03/04/2015 20:54

Helena your very lucky, I could kick myself now when I think of some of clothes & especially the shoes that I gave away, had some really cool shoes in every colour you could think off so annoying as my dd is same size & loves shoes as much as me.

Tobyjugg · 03/04/2015 21:38

The 70s were vile. "The Decade Style Forgot" as someone said.

emotionsecho · 03/04/2015 21:52

I'm really enjoying this thread and the trip down fashion and music memory lane.

SaucyJack · 03/04/2015 22:19

I haven't heard that one emotion, but I'll keep an ear out for it on the YouTubes.

If it turns out to be rubbish then I'll just watch it with the sound off Wink

StrangeLookingParasite · 03/04/2015 22:27

That's mainly what I remember about the 70s. Orange. Clothes, lipstick, curtains, walls, furniture, carpet. All orange.

And mission bloody brown. I have never, and will never own anything brown, and I suspect the 70's is why. Heeedious decade.

woodhill · 03/04/2015 22:35

don't forget avocado and purpleSmile it was very orange and brown but I suspect that is why beige and apricot became popular in the 80s.

StrangeLookingParasite · 03/04/2015 22:38

My sisters had an entirely purple bedroom - curtains, walls, bedspreads, the lot. Admittedly some of it was more lilac than dark, but god, the purple.

butterfly2015 · 03/04/2015 22:48

I remember when the world and his dog started fitting avocado bathroom suites. I also remember when the red phase kicked in which might have been the 80s and everyone had red kitchens or kitchen accessories.

It might have coincided with the red plastic accessories we all wore.

I'm shuddering at the thought of all that purple. It sounds like a brothel. I decorated my girls room a few years ago in various shades of pink with black flooring and then found some really cute lightshades in hot pink with tassels (kind of like a 20s style dress) and put them up, switched the lights on...and omg! My entire flat was glowing. It actually hurt my eyes. I had to take them down and get black ones. I'm imagining that with purple.
