to think the NittyGritty comb isn't as good as everyone makes out?

We are having our first family nit experience (hot on the heals of threadworms, kids are adorable little blighters aren't they?) Hmm

DD's were pointed out by the hairdresser (for maximum embarrassment!) I hadn't noticed them as they were so flippin miniscule - my reading prep. has said sesame seed sized - well yes if you slice it lengthways x10! I STILL can't tell you what an egg looks like though there were lots of tiny nymphs (babies) and just 2 lively adults (plus the one I picked from my own head - boak Envy)

Anyway, I followed the mumsnet nitty gritty mantra but some of the hatchlings were too small to be caught by the comb! DD has v. fine hair and I could see 3 tiny ones in a line on her hairline but the comb wasn't catching them. I picked them out by hand then worried they'd got lost in my fingernails. They really are so tiny (like less than half a hair's width) but about 2mm long. Heaven knows how many other small ones got missed. I know I need to keep combing every few days - but didn't realise that's because I needed to 'grow' them so the nitty gritty catches them Gah!

Also what DO the eggs look like? Aside from one big fat adult my head was producing nothing except the odd tiny white dot (round not long shaped like they are on internet pictures)...

And what are the chances of me being able to make a hairdressers appointment with a clean bill of health on Friday if I Hedrined and combed last night?

Scalp is actually sore and I can't tell if that's lice bites, chemicals or comb-gouging....Sad

Hedrin once works every time - 3 kids with long thick hair - never had it go wrong

oh and it's NOT CHEMICALS by the way - so no need to worry ;)

Nitty gritty is rubbish on thick hair

I put a whole bottle of conditioner on dds hair and it was still pulling and snagging

Sethspeaks · 31/03/2015 17:49

Mine had really long, thick hair. I found that I needed to condition it and get all the knots and snags out with a normal shower comb or brush. Get the hair nice and smooth, then I'd add more conditioner and use the NG. De-nitting was always done in the bath/shower.

profpoopsnagle · 31/03/2015 17:50

I tend to use Hedrin plus the NG comb on 3DC. I find the comb less useful on one of my children's hair because it is so fine, but I pull eggs out using my nails (I make sure to wash/brush hands after, not to touch my own hair and I also use a clothes brush for me as I've seen the buggers crawl up my clothes).

I have found that if I blob a line of hedrin on, then use a normal comb and nit comb to spread the hedrin through the scalp and hair shaft I use way less product and it goes to where it needs to go more- the scalp. Any nits found further away are likely to be past their prime.

PrimalLass · 31/03/2015 17:55

I prefer Full Marks to Hedrin because it is easier to wash out.

Comb and condition? Pah - no thanks. Too easy to miss the little feckers.

What is Easy Garlic please ?

drbonnieblossman · 31/03/2015 18:10

Nitty Gritty all the way here - brilliant invention.

However Hedrin was a load of rubbish for us. Burnt DC's scalp and caused blistering and scabbing. Never again.

drbonnieblossman · 31/03/2015 18:12

Oh and we only resorted to NG comb after using Hedrin which despite the agony it caused, didn't actually work.

Grilledkippers · 31/03/2015 20:19

My DD has Afro hair & the NG works a treat. You do have to smother in conditioner, comb out all knots first & work through in sections. Try again a few days later & continue till gone. Satisfying to see the little bastards removed. We have to do a weekly check but I wouldn't be without my NG!

toots111 · 31/03/2015 20:35

My head is itching.

TattyDevine · 31/03/2015 21:32

Hate nitty gritty - worked okay on the kids, but a nightmare to get through my thick mane.

Used horse insecticidal shampoo on my hair, bought from the vet - job done. Even smelled lovely and had a nice consistency! Swishy and shiny afterwards! Cost less than a tenner for a litre of the stuff! Didn't die or neigh afterwards. (This was after trying more conventional methods mind, I was fucking desperate)

herethereandeverywhere · 31/03/2015 21:39

well yesterday we caught 2 adult lice on DD and 1 on me plus loads of nymphs and no eggs. Today (she wanted me to comb otherwise I'd have left it longer) we got one egg textbook shape size and colour! And one tiny nymph. DH combed me and got nothing...I hope he's good at this....

The Nitty Gritty is one of the most hated objects in our house - by the DCs because it pulls their hair so much and by me because it doesn't bloody work. Hedrin every time now.

We've never found eggs, only ever live headlice.

Madeyemoodysmum · 31/03/2015 21:40

Lol tatty. That's hi!arious.

Fourarmsv2 · 31/03/2015 22:04

We got a bug buster comb kit on prescription.
