It's been in the media that quite a virulent strain of menW is going around and teenagers aged 14-18 are being vaccinated. Due to have dc's vaccinated against menB privately and was wondering if having the travel vaccine for MenACWY was worth getting given numbers have risen recently?

Hi

You should check with someone medically qualified, but my understanding is that the men b vaccine is also protective against the current strain of men we that is causing the present outbreak ( I guess not necessarily against other outbreaks of men w as presumably it depends on the strain).

Check out the meningitis research foundation, they are very helpful.

Mine have had men b vaccine privately. Tagging on because this illness scares me shitless.

Brilliant Beaker12 thank you! Just checked out their site and found this.

MenW meningitis and septicaemia: a new, virulent strain Cases of meningococcal W disease are rising steeply in England and Wales UK Government advisers have advised that 14-18 year olds be immunised with ACWY vaccine as soon as is practicable to prevent further increases in disease amongst the wider population
Our genome libraryhas identified the rise is due to a particularly virulent ST-11 strainThe ST-11 strain is causing severe disease in healthy teenagers and young adultsThe cases are associated with a higher than usual death rate of 13%
TheMenB vaccine, Bexsero, would provide protection against this ST-11 strain

How where they afterwards if you don't mind me asking arethereanyleftatall?

Absolutely fine. No problems at all. They were 3 and 5 at the time.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/03/2015 22:48

Great heads up that bexsero provides protection!
