dd aged 6 had an accident about 40 mins ago. She cut her leg on a jug which broke in the bath. I quickly rang my dad, threw some clothes on her and my dad drove us to the doctors because I had to hold her on my knee as she as still bleeding, crying etc. So we got to the doctors and there was a woman coming out as we went in, dd was wrapped in a blanket and towel with blood coming through. when I got to reception the nurse said the doctor had just left and wouldn't be back so I would have to wait until the out of hours service for the area opened in 30 mins, she looked at her leg and said he would probably need stiches, so i'm now waiting for out of hours to open but I could waiting a couple of hours to be seen. Luckily the bleeding has stopped and dd is watching tv happily but I am fuming.
This doctor is filling in for the local doctor who is on holidays, i'm just shocked she would walk past a child she could see was hurt, bleeding etc.

broken, can you get yourself a chocolate bar from a vending machine? You sound as if you are shocked (obviously you would be!) and you are not looking after yourself.

I hope your DD is seen very soon.

Firethorn · 30/03/2015 18:09

How do you know the doctor didn't have to be somewhere urgently? She might have had a meeting or a more serious case at another clinic. Or maybe she was late for a social event. It's a bit unreasonable to expect her to stay late and attend to a minor injury.

I'm sorry your DD was hurt. But really why did you expect instant medical attention for something minor? If you'd attended A&E you'd likely have had to wait a few hours to see the doctor, and clearly the injury wasn't serious to warrant A&E. If she'd been losing a lot of blood or had a suspected fracture it would be different, but a few stitches is a minor cut.

I suggest you learn some basic first-aid instead of rushing to doctors in a panic. If you'd put pressure on the wound, dressed it, cleaned and calmed DD yourself, the trip to doctors would have been a lot less stressful. Medics see minor wounds all the time. Don't be surprised if they don't treat them as emergencies.

sanfairyanne · 30/03/2015 18:10

why are you waiting hours for ooh when you need stitches? like everyone else says, a and e

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/03/2015 18:10

Injured child with badly cut leg, blames the GP yet comes onto Mumsnet to have a moan about it within the hour.

Priorities and all that. Wink

Sidge · 30/03/2015 18:11

Why did you go to the GP surgery?

They're not walk in centres and don't offer emergency care. You need to go to A&E or a Minor Injuries Unit depending on the local area services.

You don't even know if the woman that walked past you was the GP?

Hope your DD recovers quickly.

WayfaringStranger · 30/03/2015 18:13

I sometimes feel sorry for GPs, they are always in the wrong.

RitaOrange · 30/03/2015 18:14

Baffled as to why you took your DD to the GP surgery with a cut ??

Im sure you are shaken at what has happened OP but raging is a bit OTT.
If she didn't glance at your DD why would she notice ?

If she was bleeding so heavily then the best place would be ED surely ??

Hope DD is ok

TSSDNCOP · 30/03/2015 18:14

You clearly deemed the accident to be not worthy of a trip to A&E.

A qualified nurse looked at the wound and deemed it not worthy of a trip to A&E.

Therefore what difference does it make that the doctor left, for reasons and urgency unknown, and you have to wait 30 minutes?

VivaLeBeaver · 30/03/2015 18:15

I really don't think a GP would do stitches. Ours wouldn't and neither would OOH.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 30/03/2015 18:16

I am sorry but no matter how in the wrong the op is, the FACT is we have a heavily bleeding child in a health care environment with people who can help her and unfortunately if some thing happens to her in the next 30 mins the docs WILL BE RESPONSIBLE.

Madamecastafiore · 30/03/2015 18:16

If you had walked into a hospital with no A&E filled with doctors they wouldn't have treated her either.
YABU as you should have taken her to A&E.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 30/03/2015 18:16

Did you miss the part where she had to DRIVE WITH HER DD ON HER KNEE

Littlef00t · 30/03/2015 18:16

That's why it's called accident and emergency. Yabu

Mrsmorton · 30/03/2015 18:17

A lot has happened in the last 40min!! Obvs when you become a Dr, you become public property and cannot have any other commitments.

I'm only a dentist but a patient made a written complaint about me cancelling his appointment to attend my grandmother's funeral.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 30/03/2015 18:18

It sounds like she couldnt get her to a and e due to the bleeding and driving with her on her knee! her a and e could be ages away - ours is half and hour in good traffic.

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline · 30/03/2015 18:19

Give the poor mother a break she is frantically worried and scared!

TSSDNCOP · 30/03/2015 18:19

I'm curious what would feasibly happen to the DD? A qualified nurse deemed a 30 minute wait not an issue.

We didn't need caps to read the OP although it was lucky the dad didn't need to brake or a cut leg would have been insignificant by comparison

TSSDNCOP · 30/03/2015 18:21

You should have invited him to accompany you MrsM, surely you had time between the funeral and the wake for a check up and scale?

RitaOrange · 30/03/2015 18:21

Crikey - its the might not even have been a doctor womans responsibility ?
While their is a duty to attend to someone in a life threatening situation,a child wrapped in a blanket passing by might not even have registered.
If there was such heavy bleeding then she should have gone to ED < broken record>

Brokentopieces · 30/03/2015 18:22

The doctor surgery wasn't meant to close for another 30 minutes but the waiting room was empty, the nurse pointed at the lady getting into her car which to me was implying the lady was the doctor.
I didnt go straight to a&e because its an hour away and I know for a fact the usual doctor would of done a stich if he felt it was needed. The nurse advised me to wait for the out of hours, she also mentioned something about a nursing home so maybe that's where she was going to.
I rang out of hours and I have to wait another 2 hours for dd to be seen but the nurse on the phone gave me a load of instructions so im feeling a bit better even though im terrible with blood

Maybe aibu but if it was the local doctor he would of waited as long as it took. Thanks everyone

What's your point, Gasoline? Actually, her dad drove, while she held DD on her knee, and there's nothing in the OP to indicate that the GP surgery is significantly closer than the nearest A&E.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/03/2015 18:24

PuttingouthefirewithGasoline actually if you read the OP her Dad drove her.

Firethorn · 30/03/2015 18:25

'I am sorry but no matter how in the wrong the op is, the FACT is we have a heavily bleeding child in a health care environment with people who can help her and unfortunately if some thing happens to her in the next 30 mins the docs WILL BE RESPONSIBLE.'

No, they won't be responsible.
The child is not 'bleeding heavily'...she has a minor cut that was bleeding (as cuts do) and has already been assessed by a nurse. She may need a few stitches. She is not haemorrhaging all over floor or at risk of clinical shock! OP is BU for demanding instant attention.

Why was she playing with a breakable jug in bath anyway?

hazeyjane · 30/03/2015 18:26

The op didn't drive, her dad did.

My gp's surgery would have sent us to A+E anyway as they don't deal with minor injuries.

(As we discovered the day dh stabbed himself in the leg with a 6 inch metal spike)

hazeyjane · 30/03/2015 18:28

can I also add, that there is a chance, if it was the dr, that she was on her way to an emergency.
