To fake a trip to loch ness for my son?

exmrs · 29/03/2015 17:47

Ok son is 8 and has special needs, he is very obsessive about things and wants all the information and facts about his interests.

So he had a 3 year obsession with vacuum cleaners but now its the loch ness monster.

He wants to go to Loch ness and he thinks there will be a loch ness monster.
It is a long way from us about 8 hours in the car with no stopping and son can really only handle 1 hour in car at a time. Id say a 3 hour journey he could do in one day with lots of stops. There is only me and him so I cant entertain on car journey with me driving.
Train is even longer journey.
It would cost an absolute fortune for us to get there and it couldn't really be done in a weekend as too much travel for him.

Son has had a really rough couple of years and not much makes him happy other than his interests.
He has asked me to go as he watches documentaries on you tube and reads books etc.

Now I cant see me having the money or think he could do the journey to it but thought we could go to the lake district and I could say its the loch ness.

Is this absolutely crazy to pretend a lake is the loch ness so he can think he has been?

You sound quite wonderfull your son is going to have magical memories of his childhood, this sort of stuff is always worth doing

thegreylady · 30/03/2015 10:28

Lake Vrynwy in North Wales would be quite accessible for a day trip and it has a 'castle' on the lake side. It also has an RSPB hide which is quite comfortable and you can see some wonderful birds. I don't know about a monster story but you could tell a believable story and it is very beautiful.

MuddlePuddle · 30/03/2015 10:44

There is a Loch Ness Monster 'experience' in Edinburgh, www.lochness.com/3d-lochness-experience.htm could you afford to stop off on the way up?

nocoolnamesleft · 30/03/2015 11:06

Don't all Welsh lakes harbour afancs?

0x530x610x750x630x79 · 30/03/2015 11:22

at 8 i could explain to my son him how you have explained it to us, explain that 8 hours is a very long journey, you don't really like being in the car for more than 1 hour do you, so i don't really think you would enjoy the journey there.
My son would argue he would enjoy the journey for this reason, so find something else he loves that is 2 hours away and try going there.

But i don't know if that would work. Would a car DVD player help at all?

Muddle Puddle - There is a Loch Ness Monster 'experience' in Edinburgh, www.lochness.com/3d-lochness-experience.htm could you afford to stop off on the way up?

Unfortunately the 3D experience has now closed but that would have been a nice idea :)

exmrs · 30/03/2015 12:25

I have just seen someone from the Loch Ness centre has sent a message asking me to contact them to see if they can help and I cant believe it.

I honestly didn't start the thread for this reason but cant believe how people have given me lots of ideas if I couldn't get there and some lovely mumsnetters have offered to send Nessie things for my son.

So to everyone thank you Flowers Cake

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/craflwyn-and-beddgelert/?p=1356313339612.

What about this... Two dragons asleep beneath a lake in Beddgelert, not to mention there is the other legend about Gelert the dog?

Purplehonesty · 30/03/2015 15:22

How cool is that? And how lovely of the exhibition centre to get in touch.

What a heart warming post!
Please keep us up to date!

Moresmores · 30/03/2015 15:48

Just seen that the visitor centre has been in touch, how lovely. Op if you do go and you have PayPal I'd like to send your ds a little bit of spending money.

And yes MN I know that I don't know who people are on here and the op may well spend it on gin! But I'll risk it.

NotLoveActually · 30/03/2015 16:00

I had this exact discussing with dh the other day, randomly. Ds has been doing a project on Loch Ness at school but it's still a good 4 hour journey away from us. I suggested going up to Loch Lomond for the day instead and pretending the Loch Ness monster might be there. dh is against it, ds would probably suss it from reading the road signs and I'd take the brunt of the backlash. On balance, I wouldn't risk it. Grin

JadziaSnax · 30/03/2015 16:21

Is it just the monster that fascinates him or is it the idea of something under the lake? Just thinking as there are a couple of submerged villages in Lancashire. One is Haslingden Grane and the other is Stocks village. Not too far from Manchester.

Mrsjayy · 30/03/2015 16:33

He might be dissapointed if he doesn't see Nessie she is very shy Grin so wherever you take him it might not be good enough for him.

Mrsjayy · 30/03/2015 16:35

Oh just read on people are lovely on here

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 30/03/2015 16:50

…and the submerged village under Lady Bower? Just between Sheffield and Manchester. How about any of the Peak District legends? Near enough for an easy visit and might be something to guide him towards. Hob Houses, stone circles, hermit's cave, the 'Druid stronghold' in Birchover etc. Lot to capture a young imagination!

I also like this thread. It is a good thread Grin

Hassled · 30/03/2015 17:20

This thread has warmed the cockles of my heart - and yay! for the Loch Ness people. I really hope they can help.

hestialou · 30/03/2015 17:29

Tell him the monster moved? And then go on a hunt to see if he can find it?

friendofsadgirl · 30/03/2015 17:45

OP, the cheapest flights I can find for the two of you and is £141 return from Manchester with Flybe.
When I was about your DSs age, I went to Loch Ness. My uncle pretended to be Nessie knocking on the car window (at night, in the dark). Scared the life out of me Wink

exmrs · 30/03/2015 20:08

Sorry everyone just catching up on all the messages ??
I will try my hardest to get son to Loch Ness , it's trying to work out the
total travel time by plane as there is still a car ride after the plane journey or solely by car and weighing up which he could handle the best.

Moresmores that is a lovely kind thought but honestly I couldn't accept any money but thank you all the same

People have asked if its just Loch Ness monster he is interested in, he does like any monster/scary creatures in lakes /seas it's just it's the Loch Ness one he has particularly found very interesting and has done for awhile now.

I should be thankful he chose the Loch Ness Monster as he was reading up about the Bermuda Triangle but always comes back to the Loch Ness monster.

Again thank you for all the suggestions as I'm thinking of doing a Monster Mystery Map and putting a picture on a map every time we have found a new mystery , I think he would like that.

Ooh, I didn't know about the Peak District ones

I love the idea of a monster map, that sounds fab.
