I am clueless about xbox. Ds got one a Christmas and wants to sign up for xbox live. It wants my credit card details and says wont register or charge me but i am wary. Is this totally fine and ibu?

No.

Use Paypal.

gamerchick · 29/03/2015 16:39

No never hook up a card.

Go to a gaming shop and buy live gold or you can get it online. www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Live-Points-Points-Membership/b?ie=UTF8&node=344189031

HemanOrSheRa · 29/03/2015 16:42

Obviously nothing is 100% but my DS has had an xbox 360 and now an xbox one, with x box live, for a couple of years now and we've never had a problem. The only thing I would watch is that it is VERY easy for them to purchase games, add ons etc. A couple of clicks and it's done.

TheReluctantCountess · 29/03/2015 16:42

How old is your Ds? You might want to set up parental controls so he can't talk to just anyone.

inmyshoos · 29/03/2015 16:43

It doesnt seem to give paypal as an option. It says the credit card details are just to verify i am over 18?

Well it isn't a scam if that's what you're asking.

gamerchick · 29/03/2015 16:45

I've never had to do that and I've had an xbox since they first came out.

Buy it pre paid and enter the code. Don't hook up a card.

NobbyNobs · 29/03/2015 16:46

Xbox Live Gold isn't free. Are you getting Silver?

UghReally · 29/03/2015 16:46

Its not a scam and wont charge you but i wouldn't put my card details on an xbox as your ds can purchase games etc without your knowledge/consent

FromMeToYou · 29/03/2015 16:47

You do have to pay for live membership but google to find it cheaper than going direct.

And if my kids want to buy something through the xbox itself, I put in my cc details, then buy it, then take my cc details off the system so nothing can be purchased accidentally.

HemanOrSheRa · 29/03/2015 16:49

If you buy Live Gold from Amazon you get sent the code straight away. Maybe try this?

LottieMumofWilfJenkins · 29/03/2015 16:51

My friend buys her son three month membership. I order and pay for it via Game website and she pays me!

cleanmyhouse · 29/03/2015 16:56

i use my card and have never had a problem.

StationeryOrdering · 29/03/2015 17:00

I used my card at the beginning and it was a BIG mistake. I don't have hours to work out the settings on these things, and it became apparent that DS could then just buy anything he fancied using my linked card. Fortunately there weren't any mishaps but it scared the life out of me.

I got it removed and now just pay for LIVE membership on Amazon. Just tap in XBox live membership 3 months or whatever and you get an online code they can put into XBox.

Mini05 · 29/03/2015 17:01

I've used a card for my sons xbox live membership no problem!
But if your no happy doing that you can go down to your game store and buy a pre loaded membership and then he just as to put the code in.
Just saves having to go out to the shop to purchase card

BertieBotts · 29/03/2015 17:02

It's perfectly safe to do this from a "is is legit?" perspective. It is legit.

The problem and why people are saying it's not safe is that it links your card details to the account, making it very easy for your DS to accidentally, or on purpose, click a button in a game and buy content which will then be charged to your card.

ie, it's like signing your teenager up to a phone contract with no blocks on it. It will only charge you for what you use but it's whether you trust him to not use it, or to understand when something is charging real money (this is not always clear.)

You can do it "pay as you go" (similar to phone analogy) by buying the xbox live membership from game shops or amazon.

BertieBotts · 29/03/2015 17:03

Xbox live is not free, though. As others have said it's a subscription service. Perhaps he hasn't realised this?

Whippet81 · 29/03/2015 17:03

It isn't a scam but I know of two kids who have racked up massive bills on their parents credit cards doing this (one £300+!).

The kids both claimed they didn't know that they were buying stuff - I think it does encourage you to 'purchase' things and the kids don't see it as real money. Either way I wouldn't be linking up my card.

BobsTaintedLeftLeg · 29/03/2015 17:03

We use cd keys for Xbox live and points, cheaper usually by miles.

Never put your cc details on a childs xbox account, I've seen a kid run up a few hundred on it!
