to think we should get rid of coppers?

I've just sorted through a load of change (mostly pennies and 2p pieces that have accumulated in my purse and DP's pockets and get dumped in the pot on the mantelpiece) and now my hands stink. They're heavy and smelly and annoying and ruin your pockets and I hate them. They must be worth a fraction of what the half new penny was worth when it was discontinued.

I would like

Copper coins:

1p (discontinued)
2p (discontinued)
5p (to be phased out when it becomes as worthless as a 2p is now)

Silver coins:

10p
20p
50p

Gold coins:

£1
£2
£5

Notes:

£10
£20
£50 (and actually using them, rather than shopkeepers looking at you funnily - I'm sure nobody looked askance at you for using a £20 note in the eighties)

AIBU?

Haha I initially thought you meant police and was ready to say YABVVU!!
Hmm interesting theory but I donate all my coppers to charity boxes so am sure the charities wouldn't be happy as I'm sure many people chuck loose change in the boxes but maybe couldn't afford to put ££ in regularly? Surely it would mean the majority of prices go up also?

WorraLiberty · 29/03/2015 13:53

Noooooo!

Every Summer when the kids break up, we take all our coin pots to the supermarket and use the Coinstar machine.

Last Summer we walked away with £46 and I'm hoping for the same this year.

Other than that, I hate them too Grin

Vitamints · 29/03/2015 13:55

I'm willing to tolerate a certain amount of inflationary pressure for the sheer joy of not ever having to use pennies again. I'll probably save back the difference in unwrecked purses and trouser pockets in a year

JigsawsAreAllLittlePieces · 29/03/2015 13:57

You would have had more if you had bagged them and taken them to your bank, Worra as Coinstar charge 9.9%.

Vitamints · 29/03/2015 13:58

Apologies to police officers; I love you all and don't even slightly want to get rid of you.

I refuse to accept coppers as part of my change. If they insist, i suggest they put them in the charity pot. Simples.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 29/03/2015 13:59

I would much rather ban £20 from circulation. As someone who has spent years working in shops, the minute I see someone breaking a twenty, on something that costs less than a fiver, I get murderous thoughts. Don't even get me started on £50 notes.....

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 29/03/2015 14:00

YABU. I need them to give to DC to chuck into wishing wells, to feed slowly into charity collection boxes, to put into their little purses etc.

Soz Grin

fairgame · 29/03/2015 14:02

YANBU.
I get rid of all my coppers in the self service checkout at tesco. I have to make sure i go when it quiet because it can take a while.

If they got rid of 1p then the 99p store would be screwed.

Fluffyears · 29/03/2015 14:02

I have a coin counter jar in my kitchen and every day we put our coppers in that...£20+ and I like seeing it mount up. Mostly I give them to charity collectors too.

Vitamints · 29/03/2015 14:04

When I was a kid I once broke a ten in a shop to buy a bottle of pop for less than a quid. I apologised to the shopkeeper for not having anything smaller and he rummaged around in the register and gave me a special edition five pound coin in my change, and said "I'm sorry, I haven't got anything smaller" with a grin. I still have it too.

Fluffy40 · 29/03/2015 14:04

Agree totally, smallest value coin should be 20p, what on earth can you buy for 20p?

travertine · 29/03/2015 14:07

If we got rid of coppers there would be no 2p machines. I love them so for that reason alone they should stay. Didn't marks and sparks round up and have a huge profit? Makes sense to me. We don't need 14.99, it's fifteen quid.

NerrSnerr · 29/03/2015 14:10

What about the 2p droppers at the amusements? YABU.

Vitamints · 29/03/2015 14:12

Ive looked it up and when they got rid of the decimal halfpenny in 1984, it was worth the equivalent of one and a half pee now.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 29/03/2015 14:14

No, fuck that JigsawsAreAllLittlePieces, it was well worth a couple of quid not to have to piss about sorting a giant mountain of small coins into little bags.

Vitamints · 29/03/2015 14:15

That's a point, I do love those penny falls machines. A necessary sacrifice Sad

Of course we could always live dangerously and move on to the 10p versions.

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/03/2015 14:16

I have a pot for 1p/2p/5p and YY , I'll take them to get changed up.

I'm sure I read ( or dreamed) that the banks don't take coppers?

I used the Coinstar machine, (after I'd wandered in to check it was working Grin I'm not dragging a bag of coins in for nothing) .
They used to give you 100% value if you got a voucher to spend in store or 8% ish charge for cash.

I'd love to see the end of those blardy 2p Arcade Machines. How many parents will be dragging their DC past them in Butlins this Easter

LongHardStare · 29/03/2015 14:17

ACAB

JigsawsAreAllLittlePieces · 29/03/2015 14:17

Fair do's Worra Grin

JigsawsAreAllLittlePieces · 29/03/2015 14:19

Feels the urge to drive to seaside and use the 2p machines. Smile

TheGirlFromIpanema · 29/03/2015 14:20

1p & 2p coins are the best and only way to mindlessly spend an hour in the arcades on rainy days at the seaside!

Also if you got rid of them I'd have no savings at all unless we are counting advantage card points Grin

AnnieMoor · 29/03/2015 14:25

YANBU. I hate them too and have been known to throw them in the bin.

MargaretRiver · 29/03/2015 14:25

Australia hasn't had a coin smaller than 5 cents for decades.
UK visitors usually don't notice that we don't have smaller coins

(But listed prices still include a few $20.99 etc. Cash total prices are rounded up/down to nearest 5c, credit / debit card purchases are for correct amount)

OrlandoWoolf · 29/03/2015 14:25

I remember this in Australia. They got rid of 1 and 2 cents. The prices were still in say $1.58 - but the final bill was rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents.

Great idea.
