To think it's bloody irresponsible for my gp to tell me to bring a child with chicken pox to a sit and wait clinic?

Really don't know what to do. My dd has chicken pox and is mostly recovering, but two of her spots look dodgy so I want to get the gp to take a look. I've explained she's still contagious, but they've told me to come to the (almost certainly packed) sit and wait clinic this afternoon. They've said they'll try and find somewhere else for us to sit, but even if we do that I'll have to loiter in the waiting room while we get triaged etc.

Aibu to think this is so bloody irresponsible? Chicken pox is lethal to some people.

Don't know whether to go, even though I think it's a terrible idea, or wait and see if they get better, and use out of hours tomorrow if not. But dd shouldn't be going without medical attention because of this! Or am I totally overreacting?

Dodgy in what way? Scabby? I personally would not take a child to the GP when she was down with CP anyway....she's more open to catching something else! A spot that's gone scabby or sore is normal. Rinse with salt water.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 13:44

Sorry, they look infected. I wouldn't go otherwise, of course.

I would go but have DD in the buggy with rain covers over her.

Hope she feels better soon.

Hoppinggreen · 27/03/2015 13:47

When this happened to us they put us in a small treatment room to wait for our appointment. I suggested it as it never occurred to the Receptionist

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 13:47

Gp receptionist told me to come to surgery when I had what turned out to be swine flu.

As it happened I couldn't move (even to a car and being in a car would have practically killed me) so in the end the doctor came to see me. Actually did think I was dying.

brotherhoodofspam · 27/03/2015 13:48

Not sure what you're expecting GP to do. You've asked to be seen same day and they've agreed. You've objected to waiting in crowded waiting room so they've said they'll find somewhere else for you to sit and you're still not happy. Are you expecting a home visit or something? Now you're considering misusing the out of hours service. YABU definitely.

rockybalboa · 27/03/2015 13:48

How old is DD and will you be driving to the surgery? If so I would park, go in and check in and ask if one of the receptionists can come out to the car when the Dr is ready to see her. Or whether the Dr could come out to the car. Seems a bit odd but surely better than risking the health of immuno compromised fellow patients.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 13:49

I think op just wants an appointment so they can minimise exposure to others.

rockybalboa · 27/03/2015 13:49

brotherhood: objecting to waiting in a packed waiting room?!? Hello?!? Missing the point a bit I think...

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 13:49

I suppose it's close to home for me, because my father is on immune suppressants. If he caught cp, he would probably not survive. And then there's pregnant women and newborns.

Morelikeguidelines · 27/03/2015 13:50

Just mentioned what happened with the swine flu to demonstrate receptionists don't always think about contagion.

MrsFlannel · 27/03/2015 13:52

What exactly is wrong with the spots in question? Do they appear to be infected?

brotherhoodofspam · 27/03/2015 13:52

No Rocky. I'm not missing the point.I don't think her objection to waiting in crowded room is unreasonable, but the GP practice responded reasonably to that objection so I don't see that there's a problem. Sounds like they're being very accommodating.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 13:53

I don't mind waiting and I dont expect a home visit. Tbh, I expected them to give me a slot right at the end of the day so as to avoid other patients.

OP posts:
ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 13:54

The spots are swollen, red and pus - filled, and hot to the touch.

hazeyjane · 27/03/2015 13:55

The other week a gp told one of the parents at preschool, that in his opinion, parents should send children into school so they can get it out of the way - bloody daft, as she had taken this to mean it was ok for her to send her little one to preschool!

Well done for trying to work out a way to protect vulnerable patients, op. But do make sure your dd is seen, it is very easy for infection to set in, and can be very nasty.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 13:55

And yes brotherhood, you are entirely missing the point.

OP posts:
HeyDuggee · 27/03/2015 13:55

And did they refuse when you asked for this, or did you want them to read your thoughts?

hazeyjane · 27/03/2015 13:55

Cross posted, I would definitely make sure she is seen.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 13:56

The car idea is a good one actually, I'll do that, assuming I can get a parking space.

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 27/03/2015 13:57

Bloody hell, why is everyone being so aggressive to the op. Just because someone posts in AIBU, doesn't mean that they automatically get a sign on their back saying, 'kick me'.

brotherhoodofspam · 27/03/2015 13:57

In what way an I missing the point? out have you cross posted with my last answer?

FenellaFellorick · 27/03/2015 14:00

I think it is very thoughtful of you to think about what you might be able to do to minimise the possible risk to others. Most people don't. Many people don't even realise how serious chicken pox can be for some people.
I hope your daughter makes a speedy recovery. Thanks My youngest had a rotten time when he had it too.

brotherhoodofspam · 27/03/2015 14:01

I don't think anyone's being aggressive to OP, Hazeyjane, I'm the only person not completely agreeing with her and all I'm doing is pointing out that the GP surgery are acting reasonably and don't deserve a bashing.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 27/03/2015 14:05

I think some people think gp surgeries can do no wrong. And I am on AIBU.

Anyway, thank you to those who have offered helpful suggestions. I will make sure I get her seen.
