To say the use of the words "beautiful" and "gorgeous" are over used these days

It doesn't matter what you look like these days, if you go on facebook, instagram, Twitter or whatever, put a pic up of yourself, kids, dogs or whatever and that's what you get. I wonder if that's why so many do selfies, they get the compliments that perhaps they don't hear in real life. Is everybody all of a sudden gorgeous these days. Why do people constantly have to be told?

Yes, everyone is gorgeous. It's sad that people need to be told, but I think it's great that people do tell them.

georgeousgeorge · 27/03/2015 11:50

Nope - I get more word rage over these ones.... you can guarantee you have either seen it before or won't be "shocked"

"shocking"

"this will shock you"

"you won't be expecting this"

squoosh · 27/03/2015 11:51

I think selfie culture definitely taps into and promotes a tedious level of vanity.

I dare you to write 'quite plain really' the next time a facebook friend uploads a photo of themselves.

'Amazing' over used for everything. 'You look amazing' 'had the most amazing burger' 'they're amazing at their job'. Urgh bore off, amazing should be reserved for when things actually are amazing. It's also always pronounced 'uhmaayziing'.

Soz, slight tangent YANBU!

  1. Slap the fake tan on
  1. Clip in the hair extensions
  1. Slather on layers and layers of make up
  1. Choose flattering lighting and a flattering angle.
  1. Take a photo of yourself 50 times
  1. Choose the best to post on social media
  1. Sit back and let the comments flow in basking in your own vanity and narcissism.
Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 27/03/2015 12:03

So you'd prefer it if people were put down and called ugly tAunted for how they look. Young people commit suicide because of feeling insecure about how they look. I speak from experience I was called ugly constantly As a teen and I certAinly considered it.
Everyone is beautiful to someone.
So yes yabu.

Doesn't really bother me.

I do actually think most people are beautiful in their own way. I don't usually comment on people's selfies and don't have a lot of time for attention seeking ones but if people want to fish for compliments, let them. If people feel good about how they look, grand.

FluffyMcnuffy · 27/03/2015 12:33

I think it's very very odd for someone to get irate about people calling other people gorgeous or beautiful Confused.

Surely it's better than telling them they look like the back end of a bus.

tarashill · 27/03/2015 13:05

It certainly doesn't get me irate, but I just think it's all very vain. I do think there is too much emphasis on looks though. The alternative to telling people constantly they're beautiful isn't telling them they "look like the back end of a bus". There's no need to say anything. Not to such a degree anyway.

I just don't know how people posting selfies are not embarrassed at all. I feel embarrassed for them.

Pyjamasandwine · 27/03/2015 13:18

Oh well i am beautiful gorgeous and unbelievably hot. Wink

OnlyLovers · 27/03/2015 13:20

Im a bit sick of all these but I do use amazing quite a lot myself -.

I think 'extraordinary' is very overused at the moment. It's become almost meaningless.

NeedABumChange · 27/03/2015 13:21

YANBU. It lessens the word when it's said about bloody everything.

Schmoop · 27/03/2015 13:21

overuse of 'stunning' is beginning to irritate me

sherbetpips · 27/03/2015 13:25

I dont comment on the selfies anymore as there are a group of ladies who seem to do in continuosly as if to bolster there self esteem. Weirdly it is the two most attractive ones who do it most often, I cant imagine why they would need the re-assurance!
I recently posted on a friend of a friends pic because it truly was a beautiful picture of her, very sereen and relaxed. She ended up getting quite upset because so many people comments on how lovely the pic was she took the viewpoint that she must look dreadful normally! You cant win.

DontdrinkandFacebook · 27/03/2015 13:26

You are so right formerbabe and taras.

I think we have created a monster actually.

I don't think there is anything wrong in commenting on a friend's photos but my comments tend to be limited to 'lovely photo' or something similarly vague, or I just 'like' it.

When you start showering the recipient with sycophantic compliments that are specifically about their looks, not only does it reduce them to some sort of object to be judged, it becomes an insincere and automatic response that is no longer genuine, merely complying with the new social etiquette.

But then there is the very real fear that if one day you don't say 'gawjus and stunning hun' or whatever, to the next (very clearly posed/staged attention-seeking) selfie, it will be taken as a passive aggressive slight and a sign that they must be looking a bit rough. Hmm It's ridiculous.

letshopetheyallgeton · 27/03/2015 14:09

how about pulchritudinous?! Grin

prawnballs · 27/03/2015 15:06

Never heard of it letshope
I'm off to google Grin

DoJo · 27/03/2015 15:48

Probably my generation who had it drummed into us that 'nice' was a boring word and only to be used when absolutely unavoidable when we were producing written work in school.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 27/03/2015 15:55

I don't comment on selfies. The people taking them of themselves have usually posted hundreds of them before, they don't need to be told on each selfie they look gorgeous, beautiful or stunning.

I agree with formerbabe

They all the same anyway. Just taken from a slightly different angle with the same stupid duck faced pout.

BunnyCake · 27/03/2015 15:59

Yes, everything is a - MAZ - ing. "Beautiful" is overused too.
