Hi, does anybody here have a dog so they can tell me advice what sort of dog is easy to maintain? I want for my Mom please.

A greyhound would be fab for an older person. they don't need too much excercise, they are very gentle and lazy around the house. They are proper couch potatoes.

Lilicat1013 · 27/03/2015 11:03

Maybe you could consider a rescue dog? You should be able to be given a good idea of it's personality and an older dog that is less energetic could be a good fit. Plus it is a lovely thing to do.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 11:37

Rescue and older dog. Good breeds tend to be labradors (bit too big for your mum though maybe) or spaniel, Jack Russell. Or mongrel.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 11:39

going on what flanja said if not greyhound then maybe a whippet as very similar.

or you could consider a chihuahua or other small toy dog, they don't need a lot of walking. My friend has a mini Pinscher and it's lovely, very small and snuggly.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2015 11:41

Does she want a dog?

SoupDragon · 27/03/2015 11:42

Don't get a spaniel!

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 11:45

Soup I did hear springer spaniels are a bit nutty actually so yes scrap spaniel!

richthegreatcornholio · 27/03/2015 11:45

A rescue lurcher or greyhound would be a good bet. Serious couch potatoes and some of the most affectionate dogs you're likely to meet. Hundreds of healthy young rescue lurchers are put down every year due to no one wanting them as they are misunderstood - people think they need masses of exercise etc.

Capricorn76 · 27/03/2015 11:47

Miniature schnauzer. They are very loyal and loving. Can be excitable when young but they are content with either short or long walks and just like to snuggle up with you. They don't shed hair either which is good and when they have their hair cut they're all nice and velvety.

squoosh · 27/03/2015 11:48

Definitely go for a rescue dog that has past the puppy stage.

Border collies are always looking for a ball to be thrown, labradors are always waiting to be fed. Ask the kennels for a nice placid dog that's fond of a snooze.

thegreylady · 27/03/2015 11:48

Cavalier King Charles spaniel every time. They are very sweet, gentle and loving and don't need masses of exercise. My mum and my auntie both had them. Mum had a dog tricolour and we took him after Mum died. He was a lovely dog who got on with our cats and our other dogs. He was lovely with children too.
My aunty bred them for a while annd when she stopped kept two bitches who also had wonderful temperaments. I can't think of a better dog for an older person.

I'd love to adopt a greyhound or lurcher. Such gentle souls.

whippetwoman · 27/03/2015 11:50

I second a whippet. They are, on the whole, very gentle, quiet dogs who rarely bark, don't yap and love to cuddle up on the sofa (or on the bed given half a chance). They do like company and really are very companionable animals. Mine is completely dominated by our three cats. They don't need hugely long walks either as they have very little stamina, but do like a good run off lead. The look of a whippet is not to everyone's taste though but I like my dogs to be sleek and pointy Smile

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 11:50

My nana did have 2 (not at same time) miniature poodles into her 80s I think which were low maintenance (apart from the clipping) - nasty yappy things to me but they suited her...

richthegreatcornholio · 27/03/2015 11:51

I'd love to adopt a greyhound or lurcher. Such gentle souls.

They're the most gentle dogs I've ever encountered. People are amazed when they give ours a treat and it's taken from them so carefully.

kinkyfuckery · 27/03/2015 11:51

I'd love to adopt a greyhound and love that they don't need a lot of exercise as I have mobility problems. Can they handle exercise though? As in if I was able to go for a long walk, or to the park with the kids, would it be able to handle it?

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 11:51

Whippetwoman my friend's whippet is gorgeous that lovely light fawn colour with bits of black - it always looks as if its in a medieval tapestry when I see it lying around...

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 27/03/2015 11:54

Another one for adopt a greyhound. Lovely dogs, would get one myself if I had room (defiantly in future plans). Labs are usually the go to, but can be quite energetic. On the smaller side, I suggest a Westie perhaps?

NeedABumChange · 27/03/2015 11:54

My gran had Cavaliers too after a lifetime of breeding GSD. They were very sweet tempered and light enough to sit on her lap as she was a very small lady. They do need regular brushing though as they have a very fine coat.

Really depends on how active your mother is. I would always recommend an australian terrier. My mum has one. No dribbling, no shedding, no chewing, he is lovely. Very smart, sleeps a lot but is very social so likes lots of cuddles. Always tries to sit on me if I sit on the floor-he is not allowed on furniture. Small enough to lift easily but quite sturdy. Does need at least two small walks a day though.

NeedABumChange · 27/03/2015 11:56

I always thought greyhounds needed open space to run. We tried to rescue one when I was younger and the lady told us that the fields around our house were "too bumpy" and the dog would break his toes Confused

Elysianfields · 27/03/2015 11:58

This site is excellent www.oldies.org.uk/

We rehomed an oldie - he was 11, finally pts when he was about 16 so we had him a while. he was never any trouble ever, and was really happy pottering about.

squoosh · 27/03/2015 12:02

Oh my God, I want to adopt all the oldies! Nothing like a doggie sob story to pull at my heart strings.

squoosh · 27/03/2015 12:03

Oh he's a handsome chap Need, very jaunty. Terriers do generally have great personalities.
