To not realise Easter egg's for teachers was a thing?

shinynewnamechange · 26/03/2015 16:35

Just in the shop and heard a mum from our school call excitedly "Lets go choose all the teachers their Easter eggs!".

DD1 is in reception.
I have not purchased eggs
I did not realise this was a thing?
Have I made some huge parental mistake?!

Some people will buy presents and cards at the slightest opportunity, giving presents is a choice, not something to do just because someone else does.

RingtheBells · 26/03/2015 18:19

A nice hand made Easter card is much better and would also be done by the child, not just bought by the adult.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 26/03/2015 18:20

Ah, this explains why the other (two form entry) reception class are all giving the rep money envelopes this week. I'm so pleased out reps are less involved.

It gets crazy enough with the end of year and Christmas collections without Easter being added too!

spiderlight · 26/03/2015 18:33

I'm in Wales, DS is in Y3 and I've never encountered it, so don't worry!

teafortwo · 26/03/2015 18:40

I am a teacher and had NO idea this was a thing in any school until DD came home in tears. "Everyone gave my teacher an Easter present at school today and I had nothing to give her!" I was really thrown by it as I had never heard of Easter gifts for teachers and ontop of it I'd say about 70% of her class are Jewish! Confused

Caboodle · 26/03/2015 18:46

Teacher here...this is not a thing.

feelinghothothot · 26/03/2015 18:47

This thread has really amused me. This weekend, the class mums from ds's class confirmed that the teachers had asked for amazon vouchers in addition to their Godiva eggs. Dp went batshit, the rant is still ongoing. He's going to love this when I show him....??

Eebahgum · 26/03/2015 18:47

I've been teaching 14 years and have never been given an Easter present. And I'm really hoping its not a new thing starting or I'm going to feel compelled to buy eggs for my whole class every year.

clam · 26/03/2015 19:02

feelinghothothot "the class mums from ds's class confirmed that the teachers had asked for amazon vouchers in addition to their Godiva eggs."

I'm going to interpret that as the "class mums" asking the teachers if they'd like anything specific for Easter and were met with. "No, no, of course not. Very kind but please, it's really not necessary."
Class mums: But we really want to get you something. Everyone will be really disappointed if not.
Teachers: (embarrassed but caught in a spot) Erm, well, OK, er, not sure.
Class mums: how about 30 Easter eggs?
Teachers: (visibly shocked) Good God, no thanks Erm, well, perhaps they might prefer to get a voucher of some sort (that we can buy class resources with).
Class mums (to everyone else) The teachers have ASKED for vouchers, but it's Easter so we'll get chocolate too, and expensive stuff while we're at it, so we're not seen as cheapskates.

I've been teaching for nearly 30 years and have rarely, if ever, been given gifts at Easter (and rightly so).

PrettyLittleMitty · 26/03/2015 19:08

I do hope you are right *clam

Never heard of Easter presents for teachers here either.

Jetgir1 · 26/03/2015 19:17

Never seen easter eggs given to teachers, never done it. Don't intend to.

QuickQuickSloe · 26/03/2015 19:19

I hope not! I have a large bag of chocolatey treats for my class for tomorrow and would not want to come home with the same bag full of different chocolate.

I won't be sending DS in with anything for his teacher either, the fabulous Easter bonnet he will be sporting will be gift enough!

Minty82 · 26/03/2015 19:26

DH is a secondary teacher and regularly gets given large amounts of wine for which we are both extremely grateful! Never been given an Easter egg though.

HighwayDragon · 26/03/2015 19:29

Quite a few little gifts have been given, certainly in our year group, bunches of flowers, little bunny gifts, a few little bags mini eggs. I've not done anything, just end of year and Christmas.

MrsPoldark · 26/03/2015 19:32

Have had school age children for 9 yrs & have bought 1 Easter Egg in all that time for classroom assistant/first aider who had to deal with my DS after he faceplanted on Tarmac, blood, snot & tears everywhere, still sobbing when I picked him up an hour later. I felt she'd gone above & beyond so it was a token of genuine gratitude (at other time of year I'd have got box of chocs) rather than oneupmumship

Scichick · 26/03/2015 19:33

I teach secondary. I have never had, and would never want, an Easter egg from a student. Please don't make this a thing - my waistline couldn't stand it!

Stealthsquiggle · 26/03/2015 19:44

I have done home made (by me, not snotty DC) biscuits occasionally, and DS insisted on buying his teacher some of her favourite flowers (tulips, thank goodness!) one Easter, but certainly not every year, and not this year.

Not a thing. Even in an independent school where OTT Christmas/ end of year presents abound. A couple of DC might bring something, but certainly never enough for empty handed DC to feel left out.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 26/03/2015 19:46

As happens so often on these threads, I agree with clam Smile

I'm a primary school teacher too and another one who has rarely been given presents at Easter. I'm certainly not expecting any next week. Although I am pg and probably would eat 30 Easter eggs this year

shinynewnamechange · 26/03/2015 19:55

Right then I'm making a stand and am not getting an easter egg! Our class teachers and TAs all look far too trim to be able to eat 30 eggs! unlike me

MammaPo · 26/03/2015 19:55

I think Easter gifts are very much optional, and we only do it for our favourite teachers and/or form teachers.

I don't give chocolate, as presume most teachers will be overloaded with choccy gifts. Either we give a small bunch of Spring flowers (Narcissi, Hyacinths or something equally small but sweet), or bake some Easter-themed biscuits and pop them in some nice packaging (clear gift bags with ribbon/raffia, or nice-but-affordable tins from TK Maxx).

It's totally not compulsory though and I don't think any teacher expects gifts.

Welshmaenad · 26/03/2015 19:58

Not a thing in my part of Wales, but I don't presume to speak for the Pontcanna lot.

Ds is taking chocs for his teacher tomorrow but only because it's her last day before the 'official' teacher comes back from Mat leave.

westcoastnortherneragain · 26/03/2015 20:02

Never heard of Teachers getting chocolate at Easter

shinynewnamechange · 26/03/2015 20:03

Pontcanna lot Grin

We are so far removed from those echelons!

Welshmaenad · 26/03/2015 20:10

I used to have riding lessons in Pontcanna. Eye opening, it was. And I grew up in the Vale.

SharkSwimmer · 26/03/2015 20:13

Speaking as a primary teacher, while we really appreciate the thought that goes into gifts given to us we are only doing our job and do not expect or ask for gifts. Save your money for the volunteers; cubs leaders, football coaches etc. If you really do want to get a gift for school I'm sure a book for the class library would be appreciated.
