WIBU to cancel this holiday?

My parents very kindly offered to pay for dd and I to join them on holiday next week. They are also treating my sister and her two children. Dh is not joining us as he has too much work on.

The holiday is to celebrate my sisters 30th and Dm's 65th. Dm has had a long battle with cancer and is currrently cancer free, so lots to celebrate.

However, the holiday is in Tunisia, and a plane has just come down. I keep thinking about what I would do, with dd at 3.9, in that situation (nothing, obviously, that you can do) and now I have got myself in a bit of a state about it.

I don't want to go. Well I do, but not to Tunisia, and not on a plane really. Sad

I understand what you feel. I've always been an enthusiastic flyer but we're on a family holiday to Turkey in July with the 3DC and I feel horrible about it. I keep having dreadful, graphic nightmares, and wish I'd never agreed to go.

But (in my case) it's a crazy maternal instinct to wrap my babies up in cotton wool and this should probably be resisted! I shall stick a smile on my face and not show how terrified I am, because the chances of anything happening are extremely remote.

I imagine the flight will be distinctly un-fun though.

Basin thats what I keep doing. Blush

Maybe I should go and look at some pictures of the resort instead.

I'm off to Portugal tomorrow on a A320 - I travel a lot by plane and don't particularly like it. BUT (and I know this sounds awful) i am happier if there is a crash recently, as statistically it means that my plane will be even safer Sad. Awful I know, and I feel so bad for the relatives and parents of those on board.

TwinkieTwinkle · 26/03/2015 13:29

champion in what world would your comment be appropriate? Don't behave like a twat.

FenellaFellorick · 26/03/2015 13:34

To look at it another way - 2.5 billion people fly in a year.

out of 2.5 billion people in the air annually, thirteen hundred are killed

Obviously it's tragic when anyone loses their life, of course it is. But it is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of people who fly.

Abraid2 · 26/03/2015 13:34

YAVU. You wouldn't not drive on the motorway (or be driven) because of some of the horrific motorway crashes.

GColdtimer · 26/03/2015 13:35

I get it. Am flying on Saturday (for work) and DH is more nervous about it than ever (I fly quite a bit for work). But we would never leave the house if we didn't do stuff based on what could happen.

And champion you are behaving like a total twat

CatthiefKeith · 26/03/2015 13:38

If I drive on the motorway though I am in control of the car, and I am a very cautious and experienced driver. The doesn't make me invincible, but it does at least partly mean I have some control over the situation.

I think Champion must be having a bad day, they are usually ok I think.

It's fine to be nervous, I'm a very nervous flyer, im thinking about it now and we don't go till September! Try not to let it ruin your holiday tho- think past the flight to the delight on your mums face having everyone there, the memories you will create, the sun, sea, sand and... Wine Wink

What is unreasonable is being a complete jerk about people's insecurities.

haggardoldwitch · 26/03/2015 13:44

FCO says most of Tunisia is safe
www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia

Statistically you know the flight will be fine.

Of course its sensible to be cautious but you must go. Have a wonderful time.

Madeyemoodysmum · 26/03/2015 13:46

I'm off to Florida at Easter. I have been more nervous than usual about flying with recent events. Not just French Alps plane. But logic tells me to stop being daft. Human nature to worry about our child though so I totally understand. My dd has started horse riding this year so she is in more danger doing that.

jendot2 · 26/03/2015 19:04

I am flying to Tunisia tomorrow.... Pre booked before any of the problems. I am taking my 2 children with me.

I live in London.... I reckon I am just as likely to get bombed on the tube.

I am driving to the airport...I am more likely to die in a car crash on the way.

Go and have fun, life is too short to spend it worrying about things that are unlikely to happen,
