to take a slow cooker to Disneyland Paris?

Ok, that sounds a bit odd, but here's the thing, we're going and the whole family is veggie (and now skint.) I couldn't justify spending nearly £70 a day on meal vouchers, and it looks like Disney and France in general have different ideas about what constitutes being vegetarian. (One of the veggie options in one restaurant was fish and chips, and one of the best veggie restaurants apparently uses meat stock for veggie dishes.) Hmm

If we just pay as we go, I think we're looking at £15 each for chips and salad. It's crazy expensive, and I don't want to pay through the nose for the kids to eat crap for almost a whole week.

Soooooo... I was thinking if I took my slow cooker, we could at least have baked potatoes when we get back at night? And maybe couscous if I take the kettle? I can take some fresh stuff with me although we'll have no fridge so that will be limited, but just trying to figure out if this is a socially unacceptable thing to do, and whether I run the risk of burning down the whole hotel when the euro-adapter blows up my slow cooker. Wink

Or any other tips for not starving to death/going bankrupt while there?

We're having a (for us) expensive holiday abroad this year and as soon as I booked it, we started a collection in a jar for dd for her spends. We are now on jar 2 and there are quite a few brown notes in there. She isn't always up for it but can generally be persuaded to put money in it that she wanted to spend on tat here. Relatives have joined in with enthusiasm. Now all I need is a plan for tat control on holiday ...

CLMP · 26/03/2015 14:33

I am French and agree with the statement: the French are abysmal at catering for veggies. However, Disneyland is an international zone, so to speak, so you should have no problem finding veggie food there.

Storm15 · 26/03/2015 14:43

I would def take snacks and wine...some fruit if you can (presuming you're only going for a few days here)

Tis extortionate there. And the food is awful. Actually the pricier the restaurants get, the more disappointing the food seems to be.

Going to the Disney village place by the train station is cheaper. There are fast food joints there. I doubt they're great for veggies though...France generally isn't. I took the kids to Planet Hollywood because their kids' meal was half the price as the one in our hotel. It was still extortionate and awful.

I don't think there are any food shops as such on site. Don't how you're travelling buy maybe stop on the way there at one.

You won't be able to fill the mini-bar with your own stuff - the one in our room was one of those automatic ones that charges you as soon as you move anything it.

Maybe pay for the breakfast buffet in your hotel and take an empty handbag with you....

In summary, buy whatever non-perishables you can off-site and take it with you.

Storm15 · 26/03/2015 14:45

Should add, it's loads of fun though. Totally worth the shit food Wink. Have a great time.

jnlnem · 26/03/2015 14:51

My kids can be fussy, but when they're really hungry they'll eat whatever they're given. You might find you can use the fact they're famished from a long and busy day to your advantage. :-)

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 26/03/2015 14:52

I can assure you that the teapot/bum story was told to me by a very reliable source!

pinetree2203 · 26/03/2015 15:07

Snorting at the idea of squashing a chicken into the minibar... Although the OP is vegetarian so it's probably a bumper pack of Linda McCartney sausages elbowing out the g&ts.

Welshmaenad · 26/03/2015 16:13

I didn't find the food awful at all. We had full board plus vouchers and had some lovely meals. Was disappointed at Inventions for the price but you pay for the character dining really so I just sucked it up. Like I said, Agrabah was fantastic, Hunters Grill, Restaurant Des Stars, Cafe Mickey and Annette's were all great.

desperatedino66 · 26/03/2015 16:17

We ate in Cafe Mickey and it was the most expensive pizza ever!, My DP nearly fainted at the bill. Pizzas were nice though, and my kids loved it.

I think a lot of people used to get a pizza to share in there but they done away with that now.

TerryTheGreenHorse · 26/03/2015 16:39

This site is a godsend for trip planning and has all menus and prices! Have a fab time we're there next week! X

Glad you got some useful tips from this thread OP. It's been a funny old one and some of the responses made me laugh, particularly the idea that if you didn't let your family eat overpriced fast food then you were somehow depriving them of the true Disney experience.

I must say, having just finished putting together a huge two dish lasagne for our multi family "holiday", I'd be veering towards minimal effort myself.

ElizaP I love your post of 13.59!

My Dsis is an Hotelier........ I'm going to ask her what the weirdest / oddest / grossest guest "activity" the cleaners have come across. (I know quite a few guests have accidentally packed rugs, pictures, towels or entire bed sets in their suitcases. As they have to give their credit card details (verified before they leave) the charges for the accidentally taken items are charged to their cards...... Grin

I will be sure to ask her what she thought about a guest bringing a slow cooker or camping stove to cook in their room........!!!

confused, we were there a few weeks ago and after a full day in the parks until 10pm, I got into bed and almost couldn't get up again. I hobbled to the loo but it was touch and go for a while...

DH tells me people often piss in hotel kettles.

Glad you've decided not to take it OP.

Feckeggblue · 26/03/2015 20:39

Well, I'm sure we can all sympathise with how annoying it is when you accidentally pack the hotels rug in your bag

Welshmaenad · 26/03/2015 20:40

It was my own stupid fault, I didn't realise Dreams was on at 10 instead of 8 at the weekend. My 4 year old had passed out before I'd finished tucking him into bed!
