to dig up a bit of a plant in church grounds

Unfortunately no one is ever there during the day when I'm working. I'd just like a few shoots of the massive bamboo that is growing like a weed, and it looks like they've tried to control it. Its not growing on any graves and is massive, so a few sprigs won't be missed. I've yanked up a few 1ft lengths but Ive never get enough root for it to take, so really need to use a spade.

You really can't take a spade to a church yard!

Speak to the church warden - they will probably get the gardener to help you out.

trice · 25/03/2015 17:44

You will probably find their number on the notice board.

Bowerby · 25/03/2015 17:48

trice - that just made me LOL!!!!!! You make a good point Grin

Sallyingforth · 25/03/2015 17:55

You are certain it's bamboo?
Japanese knotweed can look like bamboo sometimes and you wouldn't want to take some of that.

HomeIsWhereTheGinIs · 25/03/2015 17:58

Ask first. It's only polite. It's. Not. Yours.

Salmotrutta · 25/03/2015 18:30

Well, how do you know it's not over a grave. It might be a grave without a headstone.

My family planted shrubs instead of putting up headstones in the cemetery.

If I found you digging up bits of shrubs in the cemetery where my family members are buried I'd be pretty angry actually.

The pertinent phrase is "like a weed" Wink

Are you really sure you want this plant in your garden? Does the above phrase ring no alarm bells??

Jacana · 25/03/2015 19:02

GrinGrin at the image of you turning up in a graveyard with a spade...

Tell you what, bet there'll be someone around on Sunday, seems to be a popular day?Wink

So put your spade in the back of your car with a bukkit, go to church and ask the Lord for your wish to be answered. Oh, and if you offer to go back to do a bit of tidying up, I'm sure it'll be appreciatedSmile

Seriously - you want us to OK stealing from a church??? Hmm As has been suggested above, ring and ask the Warden. If you don't and go ahead and take some, it is stealing.

onceinagoldenmoon · 25/03/2015 19:51

What if you release some ghosts?

Seriously, speak to someone at the Church, don't just turn up spade in hand.

cleanmyhouse · 25/03/2015 19:56

hmmmmm

the blow job workshop followed by digging up a graveyard....

uhuh. i hear you.

Discounted · 25/03/2015 19:56

I'm with Tanith. If this thing is growing in such a way that means they've "tried to control it" in the vast open space that is a church yard, why would you want it in your garden?

Personally, I think if its something you could get with a trowel you could do it. Would be wrong but you could, but no shovels.

Jacana · 25/03/2015 21:11

The best (only) thing my nfh in my old house did was to plant bamboo in his. This migrated/escaped to mine and I carefully dug some up, potted it into two 42cm pots and brought it with me to my new place, where it is an absolute delight, picking up any breeze around and rustling gently in the breeze. Love it. But, although it's invasive in situ, it proved surprisingly difficult to dig up enough roots to get it to survive. Unless you've got space earmarked for it, best to grow in tubs like I did. Rather like mint, really.
