Leaving a dog in the car

So, I'm after your opinion. We are going away for Easter weekend and were hoping to stop off in a restaurant for a quick breakfast on the way. We are taking the dog to the cottage with us so obviously she will be in the car with us.

Would it be wrong to leave her in the car with windows open ajar whilst we have breakfast or should we just do the safe thing and make a fry up before we leave? I can't imagine the weather being hot but I am a little worried. DP said she will be fine but I think it will definitely be frowned upon!

What planet do some of you come from that think leaving a dog in the car is acceptable? You wouldn't leave your baby or child in the car so why a dog? I would make sandwiches and stop off somewhere, where you can have a picnic and the dog can have a run about and do their business, don't forget poop bags and don't forget a bottle of water and a water bowl too.

I would and do this time of year. For instance on Monday, 5 degrees and sunny, I parked in the shade and left four windows open about 8 inches and had a piano lesson, dog slept for 60 mins before being taken for a walk on the way home.

I wouldn't do it if the forecast was above 10 degrees, well I would still take her with me and would put her in my teacher's garden.

Sunflower she often comes straight from home to restaurant/pub, and she doesn't often stay. Even when she's at home I know she does it there as well Shock
I am going to start politely demanding offering she drops her off at ours first.

I've heard of too many dog thefts from cars, I don't leave mine in the car for that reason let alone the heat issue

I haven't had a dog for 4 years but often look after my MIL's dog. I would leave mine and hers in the car (time dependent on weather). When camping the dogs used to sleep overnight in the back of the van.
Obviously if it was hot or very cold I wouldn't but it's a question of being sensible. The problem of thefts is becoming much more of an issue recently and makes me very anxious about leaving the dog outside the school/local shop. In your situtation OP I would try and stop at a cafe/restaurant where you could either sit outside or ask to be seated where you can see your car.

A dog isn't a child! I leave my dog at home when I go out too. I wouldn't leave my child.

Unless its a hot sunny day the dog should be absolutely fine. Park in shade and make sure the dog has water.

I bring my dog with me to work everyday and she stays in the van while im on calls.

if the dog is used to travelling in the car she will be fine!unless its a high temperature outside and you leave the car in the midday sun the chances of heatstroke during this time of year are very very low!

I'm a vet btw.
