What so they feel like? I feel so shakey, like I can't breathe properly and suddenly incredibly upset and scared- Sad I seriously don't know what's wrong with me

Sounds like a panic attack. Is there a neighbour, someone close you can be with? Just to make sure it is not something more serious. Otherwise ring DP.

Sugarfreeriot · 24/03/2015 16:51

I've only just moved here really I'd feel so stupid knocking next door- pretty sure the only person in is the carpet fitter! I seem to be able to manage it (it's not getting any worse) but it's really not nice

Panic attack by the sounds of it. I get them. Keep telling yourself you are going to be OK. Place a hand firmly just below your ribs in the and breathe really slowly and evenly through your nose and very slowly out through your mouth until it subsides. I bet there will be x posts! I hope you feel better soonFlowers

geekymommy · 24/03/2015 16:51

It does sound like a panic attack. It will go away. They usually don't last longer than about 10 minutes.

Fevertree · 24/03/2015 16:52

Sing nursery rhymes is the trick I was taught to ease myself out of a panic attack x

Sugarfreeriot · 24/03/2015 17:03

Thank you. Managed to return to "normal" whatever that is Grin

Have you seen your GP ?

Sugarfreeriot · 24/03/2015 17:54

No. I haven't. They've only recently become a regular thing I just never really saw them as a panic attack , thought maybe I was depressed but I'm not sure now because that was much worse than usual and I don't "feel" depressed until they happen

sparklepopsicles · 24/03/2015 18:18

Glad you are ok, sounds like you have anxiety have you thought about counselling or talking to your gp?

chubbymummy · 24/03/2015 18:25

I am suffering really badly from anxiety at the moment. My panic attacks vary in severity. Sometimes I feel like I'm having a heart attack, other times I feel like I might pass out. I've started having blurred vision and going almost blind during them too. I haven't yet worked out how to talk myself out of them. I have beta blockers to take when I'm having them but they give me stomach pains for days afterwards.

ClaireCampA · 24/03/2015 18:25

Glad your feeling better?? Fevertree that's a brilliant tip - thank you for sharing ??

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 24/03/2015 18:30

I used to get them when I was going through a stressful period in my life, one Christmas my first one ended up with dh driving me to A+E as I thought I was going to have a stroke or heart attack.

I learnt deep breathing techniques; 7/11 is one which calmed me down a treat.

They've thankfully passed now but I did have some cbt after being referred by the GP.

Glad you're feeling better.

Labradiddly · 24/03/2015 18:42

There are some really useful podcasts and downloads about relaxation, panic attacks, anxiety and CBT on the Glasgow Steps website. It's an NHS site, definitely worth a look.glasgowspcmh.org.uk/downloads/audio

CunningCat · 24/03/2015 19:21

I passed out when I had a panick attack when attending a first aid course, in front of all my colleagues Blush

Qwebec · 24/03/2015 19:36

Glad you got thourg it. I had major PA a few years ago. Don't call you DP next time, it might help if he gets there in time, but the next one will be worse if he can't make it. I did a desensiblisation therapy (behavioral something (CBT thank you Labra)) and it helped me massively get them to a level I could manage. Relaxation I found really hard, but also v helpeful.
Now the thing I do everyday that helps me the most is meditation.

glittertree · 24/03/2015 19:44

Poor you ...I went through a phase of these actually kept thinking I was going to pass out felt sick couldn't breath everything went dreamy and felt totally terrified ...sometimes they would come on and off all day and at night the room would be spinning I felt like I couldn't catch my breath ..
Went to the doctors convinced I was going insane and I was going to die
Breathing excercises really helped and sitting in the cold with my feet on the cold ground kept me focused ..
Gradually they dissapeared I went through these in a very stressful time in my life ..you have my full sympathy they are awful

TheChristmasTreeFairy · 24/03/2015 19:47

They are shit aren't they, glad you managed it.

I always recommend a book called 'living with it' by Bev Aisbett. It helped me a lot when mine got bad when I was pregnant with my first DC (she's now 10!) I've kept a copy to hand ever since

WyrdByrd · 24/03/2015 20:50

Glad you got through it ok - they are evil things.

I started having them again badly about 10 days ago (I'm having surgery in a few weeks so I suspect it's connected).

I haven't delved into it much beyond something I stumbled across in a book last year, but having found 'tapping' aka Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) helpful - might be worth a Google.

Also check out www.liberationinmind.com for self hypnosis - I found the insomnia one really helpful.

Lots of support on here op anytime you need it

ChickyEgg · 24/03/2015 21:01

I'm having CBT for panic at the moment. My counsellor has recommended:

www.cci.health.wa.gov.au Click on the workbooks link, and scroll down to 'panic stations'. It has really made me look at anxiety in a different way. However, see your GP and see if you could be referred for CBT.
