At home with my twins age 7 as they have nasty bug, decided to cheer us all up by looking at holidays, we've narrowed it down to portugal and I know algarve very hot and busy during August, plus it would be nice to be near a city (Lisbon).
If anyone has been here would like to know how easy it is to get into Lisbon, things to do with kids, what beaches are like etc.
Also good hotels or apartments 4/5 star
Thanks

Cascade is lovely and you can get the linha de Sintra into Lisbon by rail and there are buses which are also quick too or hire a car. Beaches are lovely and there are lots of sites. My Dh comes from around there and lived in Cascais for a while. My Pil live a bit further towards Lisbon. The seafood is wonderful, I get hungry just thinking about it!

Cascais damn autocorrect!

I know this area really well. There are lots of lovely places to stay but this resort is just fantastic:

This place has a golf course, various pools, restaurants, and really good riding stables that cater for beginners/kids right up to international dressage/showjumping.

Cascais is stunning, fantastic restaurants and cafes, really pretty. The beaches are good but can be quite windy, great for surfing! It is about an hr to Lisbon. You should go to Sintra too while you are there, it is a medieval castle on a mountain and absolutely amazing.
Also look for places in Estoril, which is the next town over.

I can second Quinta da Marinha, although it was about 15 years ago that we stayed there. It can get busy with golf tournaments so worth booking early.

Thought of a few other trips you can do from there, Obidos, fantastic walled medieval town, Mafra, royal palaces and convent, if you fancy a bit more of a trip head south to Evora as well. Lisbon itself is wonderful, my DH grew up in Bairro Alto which is one of the most historic districts it truly comes to life at night but is full of wonderful shops in the day. There is so much to do there you'll want to go back!

We stayed in a lovely apartment called Casa da Fonte last September. I've linked to the one bed, but they have a two bed in the same building. We went for the one bed (small child had the enormous sofa bed in the sitting room as this comes with a small courtyard, so good for letting DC's run around.

Really quiet, five minute walk to all three (child friendly) beaches, small park with proper traditional carousel, just one minute walk to Frangos (amazing chicken dishes among other things) and five minutes from the train station to get to Lisbon/buses to Sintra etc.,

It's v. easy to get to by public transport from the airport.

The museums and parks in Cascais are great too - and everyone wants to take small children off your hands! Grin

Oh, also, if you choose Estoril, friends (both Portugese and non) stay in the Palacio on a regular basis and rave about it (was full for the dates we wanted, hence the Cascais stay). You will likely get a better rate by phoning the hotel and negotiating rather than just booking via their site (or our friends do at any rate).

We stayed in Lisbon about 12 years ago and went to the beach at Cascais a couple of times. I don't remember it being far - maybe a 20 minute train ride? (I may be wrong on that and I know someone else has said an hour; anyway it was dead easy to get there and back in a day or even an afternoon).

Lisbon's a lovely city. Our son was about 4 at the time and he loved going round on the tram and the castle.

We stayed at the Albatroz in cascais, great location right on the beach and close to the train station, food was lovely, especially the bar food, sitting at the tables on the terrace overlooking the sea

Marking spot, we visited Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais on a cruise last year and thought Cascais looked the perfect base for a longer holiday at some point.

Guincho beach is good, but you do have to remember that it's the Atlantic and waves and currents can make it unsafe for swimming.

PoppyAmex · 26/03/2015 08:10

It's such a lovely place, with excellent access to Lisbon.

I was born and raised there, so not biased at all! Grin

I second (third) Quinta da Marinha.
