To think this is a major waste of breast milk

Apparently in Chicago there's a spa offering breast milk facials, even though it "hasn't been proved that breast milk facials work". Why oh why isn't this being donated to hospitals where it could be put to good use?! It makes me really angry that vain people would use such a precious commodity like this.

Have you tried to donate? I spent 8 weeks trying to before Christmas. It was like banging my head against a brick wall!! Not really my top priority with a newborn to also deal with.

I contacted the 4 milk banks closest to me - 2 said no, 1 said yes but communications were impossible and I am still waiting for responses to a lot of emails, and 1 never bothered to respond at all!

I agree this is not an appropriate use for the breastmilk if it possible to donate.

Discopanda · 23/03/2015 22:11

It doesn't seem right that it can be purchased for other uses IMO

I think all breast milk is paid in the states isn't it? They pay for blood donations too...

Moreisnnogedag · 23/03/2015 22:23

Why not? Surely I can sell my beast milk to whoever I choose? Personally I can't see the appeal of a breast milk facial but hey ho, each to their own. Plus it's a bit different selling a one off pump than jumping through hoops to donate.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 23/03/2015 22:25

A breast milk facial is one thing but a beast milk facial isn't for me thanks!!

Discopanda · 23/03/2015 22:32

What kind of beast are we talking about here?

I put breast milk on my face crazy hippy lady alert because it seems to soothe my rosacea. I stopped bf-ing about 9 months ago but can still express a few ml which is sufficient for my requirements.

I also tried to donate milk but they refused to let me register in advance, told me to get back in contact when I'd been bf-ing for a couple of months, took ages to respond & finally were reluctant to register me because by the time they'd got tests done it would've only been a month before they stopped accepting it because my baby was too old. Hmm

Yeuk! Breast milk is to feed babies.

End of. Yanbu op.

Your breast milk, you get to choose who to sell it to.

I would not want either but hey ho what ever rocks your boat.

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2015 22:57

You can't donate after your baby is a certain age, so it would go to waste under those circumstances.

I believe you have to make your first donation before six months.

BertieBotts · 23/03/2015 22:59

I don't think it's a waste, it's just human milk, it's ordinary. I do understand some people have a difficult time breastfeeding and find it emotive, but really, it doesn't have to be treated as something rare and special. Most adult women could produce breastmilk at any time given the right conditions. It is not a magical and rare substance and we should be wary of treating it as such.

BertieBotts · 23/03/2015 23:01

Oh okay. Have actually read the article now.

Not really on that they are taking it from a milk bank IMO. If they were getting private donations or it was their own then fair enough, I wouldn't care at all. But I do think that banked milk ought to be going to infants - that's what milk banks exist for.

Discopanda · 23/03/2015 23:32

In the USA unless you specify that you want your milk to go to infants only, it can be bought for any purposes after it's been donated.

Oh, I didn't know that. Well maybe that's different then.
