To be shocked DFriend's MIL cut her DSs hair? I mean hacked at it!

DF works sunday and her DH takes the DC to his mothers for the day. The DSs (6) fringe was a bit long but not excessive and today when I say him it looked like it had been hacked with garden shears. His 'fringe' was about 3 cm long and looked like a monks tonsure without the bald bit in the middle. It makes Dss ears look huge and they are a bit on the big side anyway.

It looks dreadful! Not even straight! Poor kid had to go to school with it.

DF said to say nothing in front of her DH as it was a very sore point, so words had clearly been said. AIBU to wonder what possessed the MIL? Is this a normal thing to do and its me?

Well, considering the number of times I've seen this complained about over the years, I hesitate to say that it's not normal, but it's certainly not acceptable. Some Grandparents behave as though they're the parents and do things like this.

Gruntfuttock · 23/03/2015 20:10

No idea why I capitalised 'grandparents' then. Blush

Gruntfuttock · 23/03/2015 20:13

It's ad enough when a grandparent takes a child to the hairdresser/barber without parents' knowledge or consent, but to hack it about like that is outrageous.

whatnoww · 23/03/2015 20:15

Why would anyone think that's an acceptable thing to do?! I'm glad my MIL is sane. Poor lad

FryOneFatManic · 23/03/2015 20:16

The problem here is the DH was present so he must have given permission.

Sendtheclowns · 23/03/2015 20:19

I've never heard of anyone doing something so outrageous! Not so bad if she was a hairdresser, but its up one side and down the other. Not even remotely even. Think DF will have to get a proper hairdresser involved as he has one 'sideburn' to his jaw and one on top of his ear! It is really hideous.

Did the DH give his mother permission?

Sendtheclowns · 23/03/2015 20:20

The DH is in the doghouse for sure.

My lovely MiL did this to DH on our wedding day Shock. Back story is that it was Xmas Eve and it hadn't occurred to DH that it might be difficult to get a haircut in a strange town without an appointment. MiL has always claimed to be a hairdresser- we think this is because she went to beauty school for a few weeks before she married FiL. She's certainly never done a day's paid work in her life Grin.

Anyway, she cut it in the kitchen, with the kitchen scissors. Looking at the pics today 20 years later it still makes me laugh. You should read Andre Agassi's autobiography. He tells a story about Steffi going out for an hour and by the time she got back, he'd cut all the baby's hair off Grin. Hilarious.

Sendtheclowns · 23/03/2015 20:21

The DH just does whatever his mother tells him! Much to DFs disgust.

In which case her issue is not with her MIL...

Sendtheclowns · 23/03/2015 20:25

Thank heavens the toddler doesn't have much hair carobos. At least she didn't get to do him too!

Poor Ds he had such lovely curls which did a good job of hiding his ears

Going to look just dandy in the photos for the easter bonnet parade on friday Shock

Oh lord Sad I did this to my own son just before his first day at secondary school. He had longish hair (gorgeous thick, butter-yellow shoulder length hair) and his fringe was in his eyes. I had often trimmed it before without problems but for some reason I just messed it up - his fringe was far too short and uneven. My poor boy was desperately trying to be brave the next morning - I could have kicked myself Sad

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 23/03/2015 21:14

I cut my dds hair once and made a balls of it. Dh insisted I take her to a proper hairdresser in future.

Wouldn't like my dm to cut their hair as she's no hairdresser either, I have old school photos.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 23/03/2015 21:14

To prove it.

carabos · 23/03/2015 21:17

sendtheclowns DH didn't have much hair either Grin and he had even less on one side when his mother had finished with it .

I was at the barbers with my DSes about 6 months ago, and there was an older couple in there with a toddler aged about 18 months. He was sitting in the woman's lap screaming pitifully and desperately about having his hair cut, I felt sorry for the poor barber as well - it was awful to watch. Poor boy got given a number one cut, which in his very blond hair left him looking like Bart Simpson. He was a handsome little fellow too, well I'd guess he was as he looked dreadful when they had finished; IMO a very short cut on a very blond kid just makes them look bald. I didn't see him before the haircut had started but he must have looked much better than the end result.

I am an "older parent" myself so I wasn't making any judgements about who this couple were. Then the man said "I don't know what our daughter is going to say when she sees his hair cut."

I still wish that I had recoiled and said "What? You've had that done without your daughter's agreement? If he was my son you'd never be alone with him again" [possible hyperbole]. But I didn't, I just gave him the cat's bum.

crazykat · 23/03/2015 21:50

I'd go mental if mil or my.parents cut one of my dcs hair without asking. Thankfully my mil and parents aren't insane.

Dh has taken ds to see mil and had his hair cut - by sil who is a hairdresser. I'd kill dh if he let anyone hack at one of the dcs hair.
