When they first came out they were brilliant, easy eating out, varsity of tasty enough food, the fun of going to the salad bar ( as a child) the sources ( which I loved).

I went to one a few years ago and it was beyond neglected, food took hours, cold, rubbish, swamped with dirty plates all round us, and a few others have awful reps round us.

Thinking of cheap, easy place to take DC, they also used to do early bird which was brilliant.

There is nothing now is there!

I'm salivating at the thought of the all you can eat £4.99 breakfast. That will be 3 sausages, 2 bacon , hash browns, scrambled eggs and beans please

hooker29 · 27/03/2015 20:45

I even realised yesterday that I didn't even get a grilled herby tomato (as stated on the menu) with my steak!
The grimmest part was outside the front door-2 large wooden planters-full of fag ends, fag packets and general rubbish-there's a smoking area about 5 yards away.Just what you want to see outside a restaurant door.
Have been on the Harvester website and ranted a lot!!

cherryade8 I expect a reasonable meal when it's cost nearly £100!!

Royalsighness · 27/03/2015 20:52

It has gone downhill IMO, I've always had the original combo with chips and corn on the cob, they don't include the hot sauce on the tables anymore just BBQ and KetchUp, the chicken and rib portion has got a lot smaller but the ribs are nicer quality and so are the chips.

The salad bar has changed they don't do the peppers anymore or the sweet corn and they have changed the pastas to weird ones. I do love harvester though and the service is always lovely at our local one, I think it's good value for money and you don't leave feeling like you have violated yourself with bad food unlike taybarn

We have 3 here within 5 miles. They vary a bit, but usually really good value and very clean/well kept. One has a new menu and different stuff on the salad bar (tabbouleh, olives and mini pickled onions, bleurgh!)

We eat there at least once a week, it's a cheap lunch, even if we go for a massive platter of chicken it's only £20 and we get tap water to drink because we're cheapskates

And carvery-wise we're a bit spoiled for choice too, but I would rather drive the extra 10 mins and pay a couple of quid more for a Toby than go to Crown, the roast potatoes are worlds apart! We have eaten at all of them regularly and only just realising how superior the Toby is. Had breakfast there a while back - they do Yorkshire puddings FOR BREAKFAST!

MargotLovedTom · 27/03/2015 21:04

Good God, Taybarns! Katie Hopkins' head would explode if she clapped eyes on the clientele of the nearest Taybarns to us. The whole concept encourages sheer gluttony.

I have never been in a Harvester.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 27/03/2015 21:14

I ate in a toby carvery last year and their roast potatoes were beyond disappointing.

AmyElliotDunne · 27/03/2015 21:53

TheRealAmandaClarke I think they must have recently upped their game roastie-wise, as I don't remember there being much difference between them and Crown previously, but last time I went to Toby they were proper, like home made ones, crispy and fluffy, not the sweaty rubbery ones you get at Crown.

Welshmaenad · 27/03/2015 22:00

There are two near us, one is consistently great, one is awful.

We ate at the one in Staines a few weeks ago on our way to Dover, and it was lovely, food was fab, salad bar was fresh and regularly restocked, service was awesome. Also, they now do sweet potato fries. SOLD.

Dowser · 27/03/2015 22:22

I don't want gourmet food.

Clean would do.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 28/03/2015 01:27

AgaPanthers
"All food is frozen" What, even the salad?

I ate in a Brewers choice at lunch today (not my choice) and had the chicken salad. It was so grim - the cucumber was slimy, I think it had been sliced DAYS ago and left in water. Ugh

I hate all the cheapo pub places with de-chefed kitchens and food of questionable origin. It's not real food. The bottomless soft drinks and coffees are good though
