Wtf, dd6 has a letter about the schools healthy lunch box policy after sending in kale crisps (raw, vegan and air dried). They are just kale and sunflower seeds with some BBQ flavours (parprika and tamari). Confused

OP posts:
StillStayingClassySanDiego · 23/03/2015 20:59

I love kale and roast/blend it (delicious) but have never seen kale crisps on sale.

Will have a nosey.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 23/03/2015 21:05

I don't usually send in shop bought kale crisps

(raw, vegan and air dried). They are just kale and sunflower seeds with some BBQ flavours (parprika and tamari).

Not organic then?

Another stunner, OP.

My children actually eat in a very similar fashion to yours actually, but possibly a little more under the radar. Grin

I didn't know you could buy them but they are delicious and very easy to make, as above.

Bought, I suppose they're nasty processed food and probably too high in salt (?) but still way better than the majority of lunchboxes and school meals.

WayfaringStranger · 23/03/2015 21:12

Was the letter from a pensioner, by any chance?

MrsAidanTurner · 23/03/2015 21:14

kale crisps, put on roasting tray drizzle some sugar and spray of oil, and bake.

taste a little like chinese green stuff, the seaweed

Op, write a nice letter and gently tell them they are mistaken about kale, add a print out about kale and leave it.
If they come back arguing - Daily Mail Sad Face!

whothehellknows · 23/03/2015 21:14

The OP's weren't even fried! Air dried kale and the school are moaning?

ememem84 · 23/03/2015 21:18

thats crazy.

when i was at school (a long time ago) i was sent home with a note for parents re my lunchbox. apparently it contained too much sugar. because i had.....sugar-snap peas.

Funnily enough I made kale crisps for the first time ever today and as I munched my way through the whole lot was eating them I knew they tasted really familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it. Then suddenly it came to me......

Crispy 'seaweed' at the Chinese restaurant! It was kale crisps all along Shock

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 23/03/2015 21:49

BlackeyedSusan · 24/03/2015 00:30

really? are they going to explain why they think they are unhealthy? I would love to see that.

IrmaGuard · 24/03/2015 01:00

Fuck, I'd rather eat the note.

carabos · 24/03/2015 08:11

MrsAidanTurner the reason they taste like Chinese "seaweed" is because that's what they are. Chinese seaweed isn't actual seaweed.

Kale crisps are revolting. I tried some and literally retched. OP - your kid wrote the note Wink.

LittleRobots · 24/03/2015 08:18

Your family must be interesting - I recognize the name from the "my friends were shocked I only let them eat fruit"... fame? Or the "oh dear organic veg aren't what they used to be."

I'd genuinely love to come and eat with you for a week, I bet your meals are fantastic!

LittleRobots · 24/03/2015 08:19

As for school I suspect its quite simple that they have a rule against "crisps". They can't police each lunchbox to check which type of crisps. They often only have a few dinner ladies roaming around so it is easier with a group to have a blanket rule.

NorahBone · 24/03/2015 08:28

Holland and Barratt, kale craving people!
They probably think kale crisps are a gateway crisp to vegetable crisps and eventually crinkle-cut salt and vinegar. I bet they'd taste better fried.

Snozberry · 24/03/2015 08:29

I don't usually send in shop bought kale crisps, but they were on offer so bought a few at the weekend.

Omg I can’t believe you don’t bake your own kale crisps. No wonder the school are worried. Have SS been notified?

AwfulBeryl · 24/03/2015 18:30

Oh wow, I love Chinese seaweed. Will give it a go, thanks for posting the recipes.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 24/03/2015 18:32

I love roasted kale, all crunchy and delicious but turn your back on the oven at your peril!

m0therofdragons · 24/03/2015 18:34

Omg I have a bag of kale - I'm trying this tonight. I love kale, dc however think it's poison.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 24/03/2015 18:36

m0ther do roast it with oil and sprinkle on salt then watch it like a hawk, it's really nice and give it a turn over in the oil frequently, worth it.

pootlebug · 24/03/2015 18:37

My DC hate kale, but like homemade kale crisps. BTW you can also pull leaves off sprouts and do the same, with similar magical children-will-eat-them consequences.

sanfairyanne · 24/03/2015 18:38

gateway crisp

maninawomansworld · 24/03/2015 20:29

I'd write and tell them to mind their own business what you feed your child.
Tell them to concentrate on educating her and leave her dietary health to you, her mother.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 24/03/2015 20:34

It is seriously the only method of cooking kale that makes it taste nice. We have it with crispy Peking duck, yum.
