To think an extra half a stone of weight shouldn't cause this much ankle pain?

A year ago I hurt my ankle....couldn't pinpoint when or how but it suddenly became very sore. I was limping and decided I'd pulled a muscle or something.

After it carried on hurting for about 3 weeks I went to the GP who couldn't find any injury so sent me for an x ray. X ray came back clear...ie no arthiritis or break.

A YEAR on it's still flaring up every day or so and I'm limping. Doctor's advice was to put it up, take some ibuprofen now and then and to try to walk normally...he said the surrounding muscles near to the spot I must have sprained have swollen and it's them that are causing the pain.

DH suggested that the half a stone extra of weight I'm carrying could be exacerbating it.

I'm not offended by him saying this...I am half a stone or maybe a bit more overweight....so AIBU to think such a small amount would not make that much difference in terms of ankle pain?

I know it's boring...I just want to know what you think about the extra weight.

Weight can make a massive difference to knee and ankle joints in general if someone is very overweight. It's pretty unlikely half a stone would make much difference. I wouldn't however suggest you see a physio about your ankle. Do you wear a support on it?

SecretNutellaFix · 22/03/2015 23:43

X-rays are unlikely to pick up conditions like tendonitis. Where is the pain?

MrsFlannel · 22/03/2015 23:44

Yes when it's bad or I want to cycle I wear a support. I can't really afford physio. It does feel better when it's been manipulated....I'm so sick of limping. :(

secret I've just done some googling and it looks like I COULD have something called "Isolated Lateral Column Pain" which is apparently common with high arches like mine. One of the pics I saw looks very like my foot...and the area is correct too....it siad it shows up negative on x rays...reccomendation is orthotics and manipulation.

It's also called Lateral Column Overload.

Sorry wasn't clear didn't mean for you to pay. I meant speak to your GP again for a referral. Many many things are not picked up on X-rays.

MrsFlannel · 22/03/2015 23:52

I should probably but have heard that it takes months on the NHS. I know you're right though.

It may do, waiting lists can be a bit of a nightmare, but the sooner you see the GP again hopefully the sooner you will get it resolved. May sound strange but is it the ankle that hurts or the foot?

MrsFlannel · 23/03/2015 00:06

The foot Running and looking at the pics of the condition I mentioned above it seems to be the right spot.

You are probably best off seeing a podiatrist rather than a physio tbh. Speak to your GP and see if you can get an nhs referral. Definitely don't keep suffering

NeedABumChange · 23/03/2015 02:24

Get on nhs waiting list but in the meantime do your best to shift the weight. Half a stone is quite a bit, your body will have its limits- obviously they are lowered due to injury.
