To ask for help and ideas on where to stay for a month in glasgow in spring 2016 on a tight budget?

We are coming to Glasgow from overseas in March/April 2016 for a family wedding. We will be staying for just over a month. Our friends had offered us accommodation but they have now withdrawn the offer. Flights and car hire are costing us minimum AUD15,000 (approx GBP7,500), so obviously, we are looking to keep costs to a minimum.

Wibu to ask you resourceful people to help me come up with ideas? There are six of us, which makes things hard. Any serviced apartments etc that I can see are coming in at silly prices. I just wanted to see if any of you could think of anything that I hadn't thought of, as right now, I'm sick with worry. It's half three in the morning here - I should be asleep for the morning but I'm sitting drinking water, racking my brains for what to do! Confused

Some of the university halls of residence rent out rooms over the Easter holidays - maybe that would help with at least a couple of the weeks?

nilbyname · 22/03/2015 16:47

Youth hostel?
Air bnb?
House swap?

DaygloYellowLady · 22/03/2015 16:48

The Sandyford Hotel on Sauchiehall St is very cheap for how nice it is and the breakfast is spot on.

Could you try short term lets on Gumtree?

Oodear · 22/03/2015 16:55

Do you want to be in the centre for the whole time?

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 22/03/2015 17:01

Thank you all!! I will look at the sandyford hotel, and also gumtree. I don't think a youth hostel would suit, as we will have two young children (3&4) and two older dcs.

We don't really need to be in the centre of Glasgow at all, any surrounding areas would be fine, as we will have a car and know our way around.

Good point, Ohdear. You could go as far north as Inveraray, as far south as Ayr, as far East as Edinburgh and right onto the west coast and still be within about an hour/hour and a half drive from central Glasgow. Visit Scotland are a good place to start. If you call
them they will search what's available for your dates and in your price range.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 22/03/2015 17:09

Thanks DayGlo. Yes, being in Glasgow cc, isn't that important. We would stay in any surrounding areas.

It's just been a bit upsetting to have had the rug pulled from under our feet. And I only found out because I contacted them about something. God knows when they were going to let us know!

I've just had a look at the Sandyford and its a wee bit dearer than I remember, still lovely though.

There are quite a few caravan parks near Glasgow, would that suit?

expatinscotland · 22/03/2015 17:12

As you have a car, I would aim for one of the holiday parks around, in Ayrshire and Loch Lomond, even Stirlingshire.

paxtecum · 22/03/2015 17:13

How about a static caravan site?

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 22/03/2015 17:14

A caravan park would suit I would think. Do the lease for a month at a time? It would give the dcs something to do on quiet nights! Grin

Ohh, I need to type faster!

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 22/03/2015 17:31

Thank you! I actually think I've bed there before, years ago!

I've looked at roseneath and although it won't let me book that far ahead right now, it would fall in about 2000GBP for a month, which is 2000 more than it was costing us Confused, but still definitely value for money. When you consider the onsite facilities etc.

It's a lovely area, I live in Helensburgh and there's plenty to do in and around, lots of lovely local shops and places to eat, also the option of parking the car and getting the train to Glasgow/Edinburgh.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 22/03/2015 23:18

I've remembered! I stayed in roseneath caravan park as a student about 18 years ago, with about 12 others. Was pretty wild, but I remember the beautiful surroundings!! Grin

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! It has stopped me freaking out quite so much.

Loads short-term/one month rentals on air B&B, Op.

Examples include a 3 bedroom house in Bishopbriggs, just over £1400/month; 3 bedroom flat in Glasgow, about £2050/month; 2 bedroom apartment at airport, about £1600/month; and a 3 bedroom rural cottage near East Kilbride, at under £1600 per month.

There may be lots more, I didn't search for long.

Check out the Stirling Uni halls- self contained flats and beautiful campus. Some are cheaper than others though

Blueberrycreampie · 23/03/2015 18:56

The Youth Hostel in Glasgow is actually in a very nice location and I believe they have family rooms. Would it be possible to at least store your belongings with friends / family? This could ensure they are safe and would allow you flexibility to travel around and go to other YHs. The one in Ambleside is lovely and not TOO far!
