AIBU re freecycle?

I know someone in need of help so went on freecycle to see if any items she needs are on offer. All I can see is "WANTED- PS3. Must be newer model not the fat one" "WANTED- TV, must be at least 18in and wall mountable".
AIBU to think these people take the piss and should be removed from the site? its really annoying to see tbh. some people genuinely need help but others seem to be taking the piss out of everyones generosity!!

We were given a PS3 and 4 games through freecycle on Christmas eve 2013. It was offered and I applied for it. We were so grateful to be given it. We had had a bad year with both of us losing jobs, Christmas was looking bleak, but thanks to his generosity the kids had a great Christmas gift.
I would never have asked for the item in a wanted post though.

YANBU. Some of the stuff people ask for really takes the piss. I thought free cycle was about recycling decent usable stuff so that those in need got something rather than it going into landfill.

Seems to be full of too many chancers who want free stuff they can flog on eBay.

We have loads of cheeky ones, but one sticks in my memory of someone who was moving into a new flat and had nothing. Fair enough, been there, done that. Except that it wasnt "Any furniture or household goods" that I would have asked for if the internet existed then. It was a brown or cream leather sofa/suite in VGC, dining table and chairs to match in VGC, large TV of a certain size and my personal favourite, a king sized bed but it must have a brand new mattress!

I like freecycle because I've been able to give away loads of things I don't use any more and I hate the thought of them going to landfill (or having to pay the council to take them away).
We had someone advertising for broken LCD TVs as he wanted to fix them - presumably he sold them on and good for him as I had two that I wanted to get rid of.
Some of them are a bit cheeky though - admin sent an email before Christmas saying that any asking for ipads, PS3s etc. would not be posted. I can't remember the actual wording but the gist of it was that 'little Johnny' would have to be disappointed.

I saw someone on our local Freecycle, asking for a jet ski.

Onecurrantbun · 22/03/2015 15:14

I use a similar group on Facebook. I've given away some good stuff - pushchair, baby clothes, toys etc as we were moving house. I have received a scooter, bike and kettle. I do see the same names taking all the time and never gifting anything, but I value clearing the space at home and conserving resources. I gave away a large rooms worth of laminate and the bloke collected within half an hour, so grateful as they'd been saving for years

However the posts that wind.me up more are like I got when giving away the pushchair; I tagged someone who'd asked for one to Give her first refusal "hoping for something more girlie hun".... it was grey!

Also the "too far for me" (20 mins walk, small item) or "can you deliver hun" argghh.

Or wanting very specific photos - my mum gave away a tent which had originally cost £400 - "it's our only chance of a family holiday but can you put it up and take a picture of how the Windows are"???

YANBU

We have some classic asks on ours but I don't mind them, I'm certainly not going to offer decent stuff to them that I could sell on, but maybe someone else wants to. I wouldn't have the balls to request like that myself.

I do love it when you get really nice, genuine responses from people though, makes my day.

VikingLady · 22/03/2015 16:44

I've asked for stuff before (bread maker, couldn't afford one and thought it would help DDs intolerances). Got loads of replies!

But I just ignore requests that are too grabby.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 22/03/2015 19:06

Ours is great, have picked up some great stuff and also passed on things we don't need anymore.

The only thing I didn't manage to get rid off was an off road buggy, pretty knackered but still useable. No takers but felt ok about taking it to the tip afterwards as I had tried to pass it on.

fluffymouse · 22/03/2015 21:57

I've tried to pass stuff on using freecycle with no luck except for baby items which go like hotcakes.

For other items, I have only had no shows or downright rude replies which I just deleted. I ended up binning brand new blinds because I couldn't get aanyone to collect.

RocketCat77 · 22/03/2015 22:15

I once offered an Ikea sofa bed that we no longer had room for. Specified in the details that I needed it to go to someone who could collect before the end of the weekend as I really needed the space.
One lady replied and asked if I could hold it for a week, when I said, sorry but I will have to offer it to the other respondent who could collect same day, as I needed it gone, she went CRAZY. Said I was messing her about because she was elderly, and I should be ashamed of myself for letting her down, she had nowhere else to sleep and because of me she was having to sleep on the floor !
At no point had I even said she could have it.
She sent me three angry xrated emails and I had to block her. Put me off using Freecycle completely. When gifting items I will now do it on a Facebook free gifting page instead.
