to put up a 10ft trellis on my boundary to block out neighbours

There is currently a 6ft wall but their house is higher and our kitchen windows face each other. I always draw the blinds as find it weird when we are both using our sinks and see each other. Plan to put some nice smelling fast climbers up so block them out in a year or two. Is would block out some of their view, but they have built a massive extension that blocks my view anyway from the side. Legally is there something about fence type structures not being over 6ft?

You have to have planning permission to go higher.

engeika · 21/03/2015 12:26

Yes. You might need planning permission. And if they object there is piece of legislation that could be in their favour, (High hedges Act or something - look it up). However their extension etc might make it ok - especially if you would also have the right to build a similar extension.

Suggest you talk to them nicely telling them what you are planning to do. They might be fine with it.

Than 10ft or 6ft? What if it is a meter away from the boundary?

I dunno anything about planning permission laws, but I don't think YABU and for all you know they might like a privacy fence too.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/03/2015 12:28

Could you approach your neighbour and see if they feel the same.
If heightening the fence is going to be a real hoo hah, could one or both of you get frosted film covering for the part of the window with the most intrusive line of sight?
Or woukd a pergola in the foreground help?
Or a garden sail?

VenusRising · 21/03/2015 12:31

Maybe grow some bamboo plants, or Virginia creeper. I done think you need any permission for a plant trellis or supporting stakes for a creeper.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/03/2015 12:32

I have a bamboo.
Unless you want it all over the garden, choose a non invasive clump forming variety.

sPJPPp · 21/03/2015 12:37

I'm actually thinking or making it a trellis on one side and with a plastic roof, so it might be more of a car port, apparently don't need pp for this unless if over 30sqm of floor space or 3 m high.

Your all right I should have a friendly chat.

Sadly its tarmac so can't grow anything, unless in pots then they never do that well. Bamboo seems very expensive from garden centre considering how it grows like a weed. Anyone near Bristol who could could do a favour by taking away a few clumps ? Grin

See if there's a local horticultural society, and ask them.

sPJPPp · 21/03/2015 12:41

Brill idea thanks tbw!

people in bristol may not be keen. after all it is a little close and those buggers spreead. I suggest you ask a little further afield... Grin

Perhaps some well positioned troughs on top of the wall -safely secured yet not a permanent feature.Would that hit planning alarm bells?
Just thinking it'd be a cheap and instant fix once planted up.

Oldraver · 21/03/2015 14:16

We have a similar problem only it is our house that is higher than next door. We have our patio which has a small retaining wall round it with trellis on top a small gap then next doors 6ft fence which comes to chest height when we stand on our patio. We have no privacy and I'm sure next door dont like us being able to see down into their conservatory seeing as they had blinds and glass film fitted within weeks of moving in.

I think planting something freestanding is the way to go but it is expensive, we would probably need something around 10 ft...The 'only allowed a 6ft fence' is all well and good when you are level with your neighbours

I had the same problem, it got so bad I hated being in my kitchen! So, I put some frosting half way up window, doesn't block the light, just the view of next door washing up!!

sPJPPp · 22/03/2015 07:21

I could put frosting in half way, I wouldn't see them, but they would see me - would need to be 90% to give privacy. Thanks will ask that forum also
