To think it's actually not bloody likely to be viral?

Sat waiting on a call from OOH for 9 month old DD3. They are too busy to give me an appointment time. The Dr on the phone said "it's likely to be viral but I suppose you'll want her seen?".

She has raised temp, sleepy, noisy breathing and a red rash.

Oh and a sister with diagnosed scarlet fever.

Coincidence though apparantly Hmm

He did sound knackered though to be fair.

To be also fair, your daughters needs seen.
If you're really concerned take her into casualty....you can never be too safe.

Can't be too careful with babies - get her seen even if they think it's viral when they see her that's fine as long as she has been checked over!

ShadowStone · 21/03/2015 01:40

I'd want her to be seen too, surely if you have a child with scarlet fever in the house there's at least a chance that the baby could be coming down with scarlet fever too. So it would make sense to have the baby checked over even if her illness does turn out to be unrelated.

Sounds like me and my brother- we both had hacking coughs, the kind where you cough and cough and retch then gasp for breath.

His apparently was asthma, mine viral. It was coincidence that we had them at the same time. And also coincidence that my brother had previously given his friend's baby a lift to hospital (where he was diagnosed with whooping cough).

Anyway, I hope you got seen and treated and are now sleeping in!

I kept getting told I had a virus and it was only when I went back to my gp for the 10th time in three months having never stopped coughing that he decided it was whooping cough and then said if it's not treated in the first two weeks they can't treat it and have to let it runs it's course. I have chronic asthma so was not impressed at all

PtolemysNeedle · 21/03/2015 08:36

Young children do pick up a lot of viruses, so based on that, it is likely that it is viral, because the symptoms you describe often are. As long as you have been offered the chance to have your dd seen, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Hopefully things are looking better for you this morning.

Scarlet fever is caused by the strep bacteria and is highly infectious, so given that a sibling has it, then it's not at all bloody likely to be viral.

I suspect that a fair few supposedly viral rashes are actually scarlet fever, especially in cases where the child also has a prolonged fever and sore throat.

Sidge · 21/03/2015 09:30

Did the doctor know she has a sibling with scarlet fever?

If not then that may reflect the lack of apparent concern.
