This is quite sad I know, but as I am in Scotland, we must pay for every bag, so I am planning to stock up...so why not go for some nice long-lasting ones?! Where do you think does the best, prettiest and toughest ones?

The 5p Co-op carriers really do bio-degrade though, RubyMay82.

I much prefer the Irish system. While you do pay for plastic bags, paper ones (which presumably present fewer environmental problems) can still be given free.

Ikea for small stuff as they fold away easily, are pretty colours and are very strong.

Tesco hessian type ones for groceries and large items.

Have been using mine for several years now and they're still going strong!

Is like the Markies retro ones (not sure if they are still doing them). My facourite is the fig rolls one.

Not a supermarket, but Holland and Barratt do canvas bags with animals on. But I am a sucker for a hedgehog.

Another vote for the Sainsbury's elephant ones - they are a bit bigger and stronger than comparable style bags at other places (I hate Sainsbury's and literally only go in there if I need a bag !)

They are also handy for packing things in if you ever have a car boot sale

I got a really sturdy one from Iceland for about 50p.

I use the Sainsburys elephant ones as washing bags.

I like Seasalt hessian large bags for my shopping. Have a collection in the car ready.

Ah I didn't realise,
That's a good enough reason!
I've got a nice bag that folds up into a ball & lives in my handbag.
So annoying when I grab my purse head in shop & realise I've left it in my handbag in the car Confused

I have some great ones I've brought back from the US, from Target and TJ Maxx (might be the same ones mentioned upthread from TKMaxx). They must be able to carry over my shoulder as I often schlepp groceries home the mile or so from the shop sans car. So while some of the bags mentioned might work, their handles wouldn't stand up to several kilo of fruit, meat and bottles of beer milk. Wink

Waitrose do green ones, hard bottom, zip top that are AMAZING. Few quid but I bought one 4 years ago and it is still going.

I used to love the brown paper sacks from Safeway. I much prefer carrying shopping on a hip, like a baby (except a baby which is composed of wine, cheese and Frys Chocolate Cream).

Thank you very much for all the ideas!
