To not counter sign this passport

I can counter sign passports.

A lady, call her Jo, at my DH's company has asked me to counter sign her sister's kid's passport.

I've know Jo for years & years. Never met her sister or sister's kid.

I've said no as I've never even met Jo's sister. Everyone saying ABU. just sign it she's clearly Jo's sister & not a terrorist.

AIBU?

No.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/03/2015 22:30

yANBU

KeturahLee · 18/03/2015 22:30

No, I wouldn't as essentially you're falsifying a document.

arethereanyleftatall · 18/03/2015 22:31

No.

SisterMoonshine · 18/03/2015 22:32

yanbu
Surely there's someone who they actually know who they can ask.

DirtyDancing · 18/03/2015 22:32

Thank you. Feel very uneasy so will stick to my guns. I don't know this lady or the kid. Could loose my job etc.

Yanbu. Signing the passport photo is to say "I am a trustworthy citizen and I can vouch that this is a true likeness of Jo's sister's kid". If you've never clapped eyes on said kid you can't sign.

Nolim · 18/03/2015 22:32

Yanbu but i think that that requirement is vu.

Morelikeguidelines · 18/03/2015 22:32

YANBU. What is the point of being someone who can countersign passports unless you have a professional approach to it? That means not falsifying any documents as mentioned.

notquitegrownup2 · 18/03/2015 22:33

YANBU - if there were any problem, could be unrelated, and the passport were investigated you would be liable.

Jo's sister should take the passport to their school teacher or GP, if they genuinely do not know anyone socially who could identify the child.

FuckItBucket · 18/03/2015 22:33

I would but then again that's what people do in RL ime..

My friends mum did it for my mum and siblings and she'd never met her.

Mum bought her a bottle of sherry as a thank you.

TRexingInAsda · 18/03/2015 22:34

Meh, it's for a kid, the niece of someone you know well for years and years. It'd be fine imo, but it's also fine not to if you don't actually know the kid itself it might be a terrorist.

DirtyDancing · 18/03/2015 22:34

I agree I take it very seriously and it's a big responsibility.

Will not sign.

KeturahLee · 18/03/2015 22:34

Would you be prepared to repeat the lie if you were contacted by phone to confirm?

KeturahLee · 18/03/2015 22:35

It's not the risk of the kid being a terrorist, it's the risk to the OP of being found out.

clarinsgirl · 18/03/2015 22:35

YANBU. You don't know them and so couldn't honestly fill in the paperwork. I seem to remember that there is a bit about how long you have known them and in what context. Surely they have someone to ask who actually knows them???

DirtyDancing · 18/03/2015 22:35

It is hard for some people to find someone to do it I know and it's a pain. My GP refuses to do them

Permanentlyexhausted · 18/03/2015 22:36

YANBU. How difficult is it to find someone to countersign a passport really? I can and have, but only for people I know.

FuckItBucket · 18/03/2015 22:36

The man in the post office signed mine for my citizenship card.

Pyjamasandwine · 18/03/2015 22:37

Masses of people can sign passports, including me, so I would think they will manage.

It's a ridiculous out dated peice of crap anyway. About time it was updated.

Totally your call.

CountingThePennies · 18/03/2015 22:37

I wouldnt of signed it either

Purplepixiedust · 18/03/2015 22:39

YANBU. You are supposed to have known the person for a period of time. If you haven't, don't sign it.

Morelikeguidelines · 18/03/2015 22:39

Is the child at school? Surely their teacher would be a good bet if they don't know anyone else.

BigRedBall · 18/03/2015 22:40

Obviously up to you but I've had my dh's friend's wife sign our kid's for the past few years. I've only ever met her once. I'd just sign it if it was for a friend.

KeturahLee · 18/03/2015 22:41

I found it really hard to find someone to sign my kids' passports - GP and teachers couldn't do it as it's supposed to be a personal acquaintance, not a professional relationship, plus I hadn't known them for two years. Didn't know any other professionals.
