council sent a bill for £61 for dropping off some tiles from an old fireplace at the tip

Recently had a small fireplace taken out. Wasnt many tiles but as they were sharp I reused 6 shopping bags so they didn't split.

Drove quite a way to the tip, put one in the bin, then on my way to drop off the next I became surrounded by the many many workers in their hi Vis saying there was a charge of 3.50 a bag of tiles. I did ask where this was signposted as thought it might have been a con. They were very inarticulate and just kept repeating ceramics cost 3.50 a bag. I wasn't sure of they were telling the truth and didn't care for their tone so I left.

Looked up on the website and it is indeed 3.50 a bag, but your allowed one "free". As long as you can hold the bag. So I put all the others in a rubble sack went back and explained to someone I'm just dropping off one bag and I can manage this one bag.

Now a few weeks later I've got a bill through for 6 bags and an admin fee, and told I have to pay in 21 days. Aibu to think this is very unfair?

Wish I had of just put them in the normal bin, but was trying to be a good citizen. I'm really questioning where the vast amount of council tax I pay goes towards.

I would complain and tell them you weren't prepared to pay £3.50 a bag so took opportunity to use one bag instead as they said it was free.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/03/2015 11:32

How on earth did they know that you were dropping off one bag?

I'd write to them and say you only dropped off one bag.

vickibee · 17/03/2015 11:36

how did thay know who you were / your address to issue a bill?

scurryfunge · 17/03/2015 11:39

The rubbish dumps usually have number plate recognition vickibee

Our council tip has numberplate recognition - it's not new or high tech, so presumably it's fairly standard. I'd always presumed it was incase you'd dropped off something dodgy, rather than for charging, though.

£40 admin fee?

And surely you just need to pay the one £3.50 charge for the large rubble sack? Or is it one free bag per visit?

DoJo · 17/03/2015 11:45

Whatever the rules about the bags, a £40 admin fee is disproportionate! Is there information on how you can challenge this?

sPJPPp · 17/03/2015 12:49

Yes I think its from number plate software.

I've given upl trying to get through to someone at the council so writing an email.

Its one bag per visit Max visit of one a week. I did technically drop off two, but the first one would of fitted in the rubble sack had there of been signage to say so I would of only dropped off one. Fed up of the poor value from the council so will write to them.
