It's kind of a what would you do in my position - I don't have another job lined up.

But...

Keeping it simple - our rota has changed meaning in working 10 days in a row with 2 days off either side.

Money is just over minimum wage,

We get 1 weekend off a month - this has just been put into place - it used to be every other weekend working 7 days, then the next week you'd work 3 days with the weekend off?

Now at the weekends we don't get a dinner break - or the time back & to be honest I'm just a bit fed up?

So please, kind people - what would you do?

Depends how easily you could get another job?

notsolovely · 17/03/2015 10:18

Find something else asap then leave. Unless you won't be able to provide are for your children, under the new changes. But personally I never leave jobs without having found a new one.

Purplepoodle · 17/03/2015 10:20

I would rapidly start applying for jobs, let current employer know exactly why you are applying for new jobs. It's always easier to get a job when u already have one

notsolovely · 17/03/2015 10:20

*provide care for your children

wheresthelight · 17/03/2015 10:22

get another job first - you won't get income support or jsa if you need it if you make yourself unemployed

MsVestibule · 17/03/2015 10:23

Sorry, I got a bit confused! Have they actually increased the number of hours you work in a month? If so, will you be paid for them? Regarding working through your lunch break on a weekend, will you be paid for it?

Whatever the circumstances though, if you're unhappy with the change in working pattern, I would suggest you stay where you are while you look elsewhere. As you know, it's easier to find a job when you've already got one.

scortja · 17/03/2015 10:25

Unionise!

stormtreader · 17/03/2015 10:25

What hours are you working on the days you dont get a dinner break? You are legally required to have one if youre working over a certain number of hours

Teeb · 17/03/2015 10:31

What's the job market like where you are? I wouldn't leave in those circumstances without something else to jump to.

Are you sure they are behaving lawfully in regards to breaks?

FishWithABicycle · 17/03/2015 10:34

I'd stick with it for just long enough to find another position, then quit. It sounds horrible but you don't get benefits if you made yourself intentionally unemployed so suck it up but get out of there asap.
But the thing about not getting a dinner break - you are legally euntitled to a break every 6 hours - if they are breaking the rules then you are entitled to demand your rights even if you aren't planning on staying.

MajesticWhine · 17/03/2015 10:36

Who is this employer? They sound crap. But I would hang in there and complain about your conditions while you look for something else.

Viviennemary · 17/03/2015 10:41

It depends on your own circumstances. If you can manage financially without a job for a time then you should quit. It sounds dreadful and they are breaking laws re lunch breaks and so on if you are doing over a certain number of hours per shift. Is anybody else unhappy with the new changes. It might not do any good but it is worth approaching the management re these changes.

MissDuke · 17/03/2015 10:43

Totally depends on your circumstances. Can you afford to be out of work for a while? It does sound rubbish tbh.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2015 10:53

check out whether you are entitled to a lunch break, I think it depends on how many hours you are working on that day.

championnibbler · 17/03/2015 11:04

are you not entitled to a break after 4 working hours?
check your employment rights.
sounds grim by the way, i know, i've been there.

KateSpade · 17/03/2015 13:09

Weekend hours are 8-6 and we don't get a break, as their is only 1 person in so we don't get a break. This has changed for Saturdays - their will now be 2 people in, but no break on Sunday, still

& yes the hours are increased, but no more money.

Most of these things have been mentioned at the most recent managers meeting & the company directors said 'if you don't like it, fuck off!'

We have are also required to work a lot of hours unpaid, it's about 1 hour a day, so nearly a fortnights work for free each month.

It sounds silly, but my store manager is very laid back, but can't change the rules, as it's down to head office!

Tonight I am going to look for another job, If this was something I saw as a career, I would probably suck it up. But it's not at all!

londonrach · 17/03/2015 13:11

Get another job first. Good luck op.

Ihavenoideawhereitis · 17/03/2015 13:17

The average hours worked must not work out to below minimum wage. So if you are near nmw, and you are now doing extra unpaid hours, they are breaking the law. They Are also breaking the law re the break. The laws are in place to protect employees, so use this to your benefit.

skrumle · 17/03/2015 13:17

you could try ACAS - they're not meeting the minimum break times on a sunday and may well be breaking working time rules as well.

KateSpade · 17/03/2015 13:26

I didn't think of that, all those who suggest a union. I may call them on my next day off!

It's one if those 'better the devil you know' things, knowing my luck in life I'd end up with an even worse job!

Also my daughter has been to two birthday parties recently, both times I was working! & she's been invited to another 2 - and yes! You guessed it, I'm working!

OP posts:
OnlyLovers · 17/03/2015 13:29

I don't think you can legally work that long without a break. Do call a union and /or ACAS.

And I agree with everyone: find a new job, THEN give your notice. Good luck!

popalot · 17/03/2015 13:30

Union, look for another job and then hand in notice. Your bosses sound like cretins. Look for something with the hours you want.
