To keep my son off to watch the eclipse

Live in an area where we will see over 90% of the eclipse. I saw a total eclipse when I was younger and it was honestly amazing, such an experience! DS has been learning about it in school but they won't be allowed to watch it. AIBU to keep him off for the small portion of the morning to let him see it? It would be less than an hour.

I'm wondering the same - reception class hasn't made a decision whether they can watch it yet.

I'm considering the same thing. It's an amazing thing to see. It does go against the grain with me as my kids never miss school unless they are severely ill or have limbs hanging off.

TwinkieTwinkle · 17/03/2015 09:47

See, my son never really misses school either. Perhaps that's why I don't feel too bad about potentially doing it. He is so excited and I know it's an amazing thing to see.

There is another eclipse thread if you want to see what other schools are doing.

My dd's teacher has no problem with her coming in an hour late on Friday.

We're keeping DS off for the morning.

He wants to see it.

TwinkieTwinkle · 17/03/2015 12:12

Phew! Glad to see people are thinking along the same lines as me!

I'm keeping ds off then taking him in afterwards. I have asked the school what they are planning on doing but I have not been given a definite answer, If I take him, I will miss it myself as I will be driving.

BathshebaDarkstone · 17/03/2015 12:18

Why won't they let them watch it? Confused We watched a partial eclipse at school when I was 9 (?)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/03/2015 12:22

Lots if schools are very concerned about the H&S implications. It is pretty hard to make sure an entire class never looks at the sun without the appropriate protection.

RainbowFlutterby · 17/03/2015 12:23

Apparently it's going to be cloudy Sad.

SistersOfPercy · 17/03/2015 12:27

Somewhat different as DD is 17 and in sixth form, but they have no plans to let them out of lessons to watch and DD has a free first so she'll be going in later and we'll watch it here together.
If it's cloudy then she'll go in normal time.

Methe · 17/03/2015 12:29

I'll be keeping mine off in the morning of the weather is reasonable.

notsolovely · 17/03/2015 12:29

What time is it happening?

RainbowFlutterby · 17/03/2015 13:00

Starts at about 8:30, maximum eclipse at about 9:30, all over by about 10:30.

notsolovely · 17/03/2015 13:03

I would keep them at home. But our school is letting them observe it. But DH is very excited about it, so if the school weren't doing anything, we would.

neverputasockinatoaster · 17/03/2015 13:08

The DCs' headteacher caught me this morning and gave me perission to keep them off to watch.

RocketInMyPocket · 17/03/2015 13:32

Definitely NBU, seeing as the next total eclipse is something like 2035?

RocketInMyPocket · 17/03/2015 13:33

Know this one isn't a total, but 90 percent doesn't come around that often either!
