AIBU to feel upset that I did my job correctly and compliantly and now I'm in trouble for it?

Yanbu, why would your boss want you to lie?

engeika · 16/03/2015 12:54

Depends on the circumstances. I somehow doubt it is as simple as that. Bosses don't usually go round telling employees not to their jobs properly.

Without full story - who knows if YABU?

Nolim · 16/03/2015 12:57

Agree with andro

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 16/03/2015 13:02

I had to lie in a previous job, I hated it. Left after 3 months. It was awful.

YANBU, no-one should have to lie for any reason.

PossiblyIrrational · 16/03/2015 13:02

It's quite petty really, I work in finance and inputted a customers details EXACTLY as they told me, including their residential status. Due to the customer being classed as 'living with parents' their application was declined.
Boss told me i should have changed the details to 'private tenant'. However I am not comfortable with falsifying information on a finance application.

Falsifying records would surely be seen as fraud..?

LaurieFairyCake · 16/03/2015 13:03

That's not petty, you are responsible for what you input

stillwearingaredribbon · 16/03/2015 13:04

Are you and boss from the US?
If not why were you drinking?
Or do you mean pissed off?
Irrelevant I know

PossiblyIrrational · 16/03/2015 13:05

Haha! Pissed off! We were not drinking! :-)

Raise it with compliance and hr to make sure that he doesnt retaliate.

Fwiw i think you were right to fill out the form correctly.

PossiblyIrrational · 16/03/2015 13:08

We don't have a HR or Compliance department, there's just myself, one other administration assistant and the boss who make up the WHOLE company.

Holepunch · 16/03/2015 13:13

So presumably you're brokers of some sort, otherwise it would be the boss' say as to whether the application was agreed, regardless of what you input.

What you really should do is report it to the regulator, but obviously that might not be good for your job. Ultimately though, you will have to decide if you're prepared to continue working for this person.

I used to work with someone who refused to lie (unless it suited him!) and wouldn't tell someone on the phone you were out is you weren't, which was deeply annoying but I would have done what you did and would be outraged to be told I should have done differently.

Tinuviel · 16/03/2015 13:17

I remember lying at work by saying my boss was out when I was sat opposite him and he watched me with a big grin because he knew I was crap at lying. But the person phoning was a PITA, so I could understand why he didn't want to talk to him at that particular moment. That is as far as I would be prepared to go with regards to lying at work. In your situation, I would have done exactly the same as you.

YANBU.

MinceSpy · 16/03/2015 13:24

Your boss wanted you to commit fraud, if he wants to that's his choice. Maybe a good time to start looking at fresh job opportunities.

MrsHathaway · 16/03/2015 13:38

Golly.

That company isn't going to last long.

engeika · 16/03/2015 13:45

Mince has it in one.
