AIBU to get just a Roomba vacuum ?

Need a new hoover. Very tempted by a Roomba so that it can clean in between the cleaner visits and when she is on holiday.

Will a Roomba be sufficient or do I need to get a conventional one for the cleaner to use. Seems a bit extravagant to buy two machines, esp as the Roomba is expensive anyway.

Anybody else's cleaner clean with just a Roomba ?

I was thinking she could put it on at the start of her visits (does 2 x 2 hours visits per week each) so downstairs gets hoovered at beginning of week & upstairs in the second visit at end of week.

Does this sound reasonable & feasible ?

I love my roomba but you do need another hoover as it can't do the stairs. You wouldn't really need your cleaner to put it on though - it's just press a button. We set out going in a different room each day as we leave the house. It might actually get in her way a bit if she is moving around trying to clean while it's working.

Scotchmincepie · 14/03/2015 12:36

We use the roomba as a top up between visits. Cleaners bring their own Hoover but we have one anyway for the stairs.

QOD · 14/03/2015 12:39

I say it's in addition to. You can't dictate where it goes and would get right in the cleaners way. Not a huge er dust box (forget what it's called?) And no way time efficient Noe woukd the battery last doing different rooms
I love mine but they are very temperamental ... always beeping and farting about

ToBeeOrNot · 14/03/2015 12:47

I enjoyed having a Roomba for a bit, but I could never leave him unsupervised as he got up to all sorts of mischief!

Definitely something to have as well as another vacuum not instead of.

TheMoa · 14/03/2015 12:49

I'd say you'd need a normal one too.

I won't get one because I'm afraid it would eat all the dropped Lego Grin

OldFarticus · 14/03/2015 12:49

I have the LG one which is a bit cheaper than the Roomba. I love it but it's definitely no substitute for a proper vacuum cleaner. Mine just helps me keep on top of the fur mountain that our cats shed. The "bag" is pretty small. It also works better is small square ish rooms.

Apricota · 14/03/2015 12:52

I have just got my Roomba and it's itsy day was today. We had a very very dirty floors. It has done a great job. I am very pleased. Also have a dyson for the stairs etc

Dontknow87 · 14/03/2015 12:55

Only if you have a cat and you can put up a video of the cat riding the roomba.

Gem124 · 14/03/2015 13:02

Love our roomba for day to day but have a dyson too for a thorough clean.

TheFullGammon · 14/03/2015 13:04

I agree with the others, it's not enough in itself and it doesn't do stairs. Plus making sure every single thing is picked up beforehand is a pain - sometimes it's easier to use a normal one to go round the half-finished game of monopoly etc.

You could ask your cleaner if they could bring their own and see how you go, I suppose, but if you have him/her to get the worst done every week i think a conventional onewould be a better choice.

Also since we got a v basic Miele (£130) I'm astonished how much more it sucked up than the roomba. Roomba is great for surface bits and hair but I don't think ours gets into the pile like the new one. Could just be older vs newer machine I suppose.

butterfly2015 · 14/03/2015 13:05

I agree with dontknow. They are cat cars and your cat's need outfits to ride them.

Paintedpinksapphires · 14/03/2015 13:06

I've been thinking about a Roomba for a while. Would you all recommend one? Which model?

ToBeeOrNot · 14/03/2015 13:40

Ours was used exclusively in the kitchen/diner on a tiled floor. Great for just keeping on top of crumbs and stuff. I used to get him to hoover whilst i sat and had a cup of tea and kept an eye on him.

redrubyindigo · 14/03/2015 13:46

Was it on Mumsnet where I read about the woman who set her Roomba off without realising the dog had been massively sick and a nasty bout of diarrhoea in the sitting room.

She came back to HUGE swirls of awfulness all over the floor. [vomit]

Poor woman!

CaTsMaMmA · 14/03/2015 13:49

yes redruby ...I always think of that thread when anyone mentions roombas...

it was the hall and sitting room wasn't it? All generously covered in dog diarrhoea Shock [vomit] Shock

ChristyMooreRocks · 14/03/2015 14:09

I came onto this thread soley to tell the dog poo story, it's all I think about too when I see Roombas! She said that there were crop circles where the roomba had sensed it was particularly dirty and had gone over the same bit over and over again. And that she had to clean the shit out of all the brushes (waaaaahhhhhh!)

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/03/2015 14:23

Love the idea of the scooba but it's £600 Shock which is a lot of money for a mop, albeit a fancy mop.

Apatite1 · 14/03/2015 14:27

Cleaner comes every two weeks and uses dyson (am switching to meile though). Getting a roomba once we move into new house as we have large open plan living downstairs and it will keep on top of dirt in between visits.

ChristyMooreRocks · 14/03/2015 14:29

An super jealous of you having a cleaner twice a week! I'm still trying to persuade DH that we should get one once every two weeks...

redrubyindigo · 14/03/2015 14:42

Ahh my Miele.

It is twenty years old this year. I might throw a party and make loads of mess with glitter and popcorn and sprinkly stars and house bricks so he it can enjoy cleaning them up.

MistressMia · 14/03/2015 15:02

OK, so sounding like an expensive toy. Cleaner won't have the patience to supervise it. Sounded good in principle - free up her time to do something else.

So back to conventional. Bought a Felix Sebo 2 yrs ago thinking it would last years but bloody thing has been so glitchy and last week blew up ! Now not sure what to get. Hate Dysons. Try Miele again ?

Still love my Henry! Better than my new Dyson. (Old Dysons were amazing though).
