Praise texts from school...

So today another mum posted on facebook that her dc had got a praise text from school 'for being lovely'. Seriously?

DS has never got a praise text :(

If it wasn't for other mums putting them on facebook and talk in the playground, I wouldn't know they even existed!

Surely DS has done something worth a sodding praise text in the whole academic year so far?

Wibu to speak to his teacher? Or is that OTT?

I've never heard such nonsense.Praise texts sound batshit enough without parents bragging on social media.Whatever next? Confused < old gimmer here >

My ds's secondary school send postcards for excellence and effort ...I have also had phonecalls from teachers for exceptional work.
Its a boys state secondary.
My dd's secondary school doesn't do it.

DD never got anything at primary, but does get postcards at secondary.

Point is though Marco. There is this thing called every child matters not just the children of parents who lick the teachers arse who who come from the right side of the road. every child has something positive about them. It's a teachers job to see that

Our school gives out (or used to) certificates for good behaviour/etc.

Dd1 got one, dd2, zero. I told them that this isn't because they don't behave, or do as they are told, it is because they don't need the encouragement that the certificates bring along with them. Because they ARE well behaved.

I also told them that they need to stop expecting praise for doing what is expected of them (i.e being kind, doing their work, doing what they are asked) because it's just what we do. Behaving as we should, as is expected shouldn't be noteworthy.

Praise texts? Seriously wtf?! Giving merits or stickers or something directly to the child is one thing but this concept is just odd. Am I alone in thinking this????

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 16/03/2015 08:05

The whole reward concept is devalued by the "All must get prizes" mentality"

So true!

That said Dc1's year group recently had a sleepover at school and they had to earn credits to be able to do it. There were some that didn't so they missed out. The credits weren't for doing good work but behaving and showing that they could be responsible and trustworthy. They're doing something similar now. Earn so many credits and they get to go bowling. Those that don't won't get to go. Some might think that's unfair but if they behaved they'd earn the credits they need to be able to go.

I've had one or two of these texts. They're nice. Think no more of it.

But if the school is sending out texts to dc 'because they're lovely' then what sort of use is that? Not telling the parents anything constructive, is it? And surely my dc Must have done something noteworthy or lovely in the past year?! The school certainly used to make sure that everyone got a turn at star of the week etc.., all for different reasons depending on the dc.
