DS eats a hot school meal so for our evening meal we have a packed lunch type...he ate everything but his little box of raisins. He normally loves these so I asked him why he hadn't eaten them, he said the dentist told him he couldn't have raisins as they're bad!

It turns out they had a dentist visit the school, now I understand that sugar is very bad for teeth, DS brushes his teeth twice a day and drinks water.

Surely it's wrong for a school dentist to say what they can and can't eat? I have enough trouble getting food into DS without someone cutting that down for me!

I assume the dentist didn't actually say he couldn't have them but educated his class on how much sugar is in a pack of raisins and explained how bad sugar is for teeth.

I don't think your child's health will suffer much if he avoids raisins.

Just ask him what he said was good for teeth - calcium in brocolli for example?

Bowlersarm · 12/03/2015 17:19

I think for dentists, raisins are about the worst thing a child can eat, so they probably feel duty bound to get the message across.

OhFlippityBolax · 12/03/2015 17:44

But they are really really bad

They stick to the teeth and rot them

LurkingHusband · 12/03/2015 17:46

One wonders how chimps and gorillas manage ?

Nervo · 12/03/2015 17:49

It will be as Bubbles described. So, yes YABU.

Raisins are full of sugar - no harm in knowing that.

BubblesInMyBath · 12/03/2015 17:49

Chimps and gorillas presumably manage as they aren't eating hidden sugars in tons of processed food and fruit juices.

Of course the ones in captivity may be eating more. I'd hate to be a gorilla dentist

Perfectlypurple · 12/03/2015 17:50

They are raisins not the Devils food. If people clean their teeth regularly and don't eat stacks of sugar their teeth won't rot from eating a small amount of raisins. And, in this case he is eating them at home so nothing to stop a quick extra teeth clean.

Mrsmorton · 12/03/2015 17:54

Op, watch junk food kids and have a little think about the lowest common denominator. Of course your son won't get decay. Because, he won't. Will he- I mean, even if he eats raisins. Because you're his mum and that makes everything anyone else says completely inappropriate and wrong.

What does the dentist know. Pfft, silly man, talking himself out of all that work watching child abuse by neglect when the children come in with abscesses caused by preventable dental decay.

PopcornFrenzy · 12/03/2015 18:20

Mrsmorton, fair enough the dentist saying about the fact that they are full of sugar I know this but it's the fact he said you CAN'T eat them, of course a 5 year old boy is going to listen and refuse to eat them, that is what my issue is.

He doesn't drink juice/squash only milk and water, we are hot on toothbrushing, I follow all the advice about giving all sweet stuff in a oner so he's only having one sweet hit a day, I don't think a few raisins hurt.

One wonders how chimps and gorillas are able to pick and dry the grapes before eating them.

coolaschmoola · 12/03/2015 18:23

I won't give dd raisins because they are like sugar glue. Grapes yes, not sticky, other fruit fine. Dried fruit? No.

:o :o :o

Pipbin · 12/03/2015 18:27

And did he actually say that he CAN'T eat them?
I know that on MN we are never meant to question the understanding and memory skills of a 5 year old but could it be that he said something more like 'best not to' or 'shouldn't eat too often' rather than 'can't.'

While I'm sure your child is very bright and able I can't really imagine that he was paying this much attention to the dentist to remember the exact wording.

Dr0pThePirate · 12/03/2015 18:29

Yeah, the other apes don't eat raisins in the wild or any other dried fruit made with extra fruit juices. They don't live as long as humans either and the loss of their teeth usually signals the end of their health and then the inevitable isn't far off.

This has made me laugh a lot. Grin

countessmarkyabitch · 12/03/2015 18:35

You don't know what the dentist said. You know what a 5 year old thinks the dentist said, which is by no means certainly the same thing.

MinceSpy · 12/03/2015 18:36

A box from the six pack of Sunmaid raisins contains 20 grams of sugar, that's five teaspoons of sugar. The mini packs contain 10 grams of sugar.
That is why dentists don't like them. I'd vary the raisins along with other dried fruits, fresh fruit and veg sticks.
