To not want to travel two hours each way for a dress fitting?

Bride is getting her bridesmaids dresses done for free by her relative as a wedding gift.
But to be quite honest I do not want to travel two hours each way for an hours fitting. I also get travel anxiety which basically makes me need the loo constantly (or at least panic that I do) and its a whole weekend day spent away from my family, which as I work full time, is precious.
I know I'm going to have to go, I kind of became her only adult bridesmaid by default somehow and I do love and care about her but I just don't want to go :/ AIBU?

Wow... I wonder how people manage to look good in off the peg clothes if bridesmaids dresses need 6 fittings... Shock

I was going to say YANBU just for the wasted day let alone the travel anxiety... But I wore an evening dress as wedding dress (ordered on ebay) and my only bridesmaid had an off the peg dress of her own choice from Monsoon Grin Clearly I know nothing about weddings - what a faff!

Your travel anxiety does sound very limiting to you personally in a more general way though; it might be worth seeing if NHS funds CUT to help you with that longer term!

Sorry, not sure where "CUT" came from Confused phone automatically wrote it in response to "NHS" perhaps!

YANBU. I think some of the people saying YABU probably don't understand the severity of travel anxiety. I used to have full on panic attacks for a week before a long journey, convinced I was going to die, it would trigger a massive IBS attack and I had to cancel so much due to the anxiety. Thankfully I've now had counselling as it was triggered by a car crash, but I totally understand where you're coming from.

I'd ask to travel down by train, where there's toilets. Tell them you'll meet them there?

Yabu. If you travelling together tell them about needing the toilet and why as im sure they stop.

If you don't want to admit to your anxiety then you coulc always say you have a urinary tract infection - everyone would be very sympathetic towards that and it would stop them grilling you.

Also, have you asked if its possible not to go? If the dress is nearly done then they could easily pop it in the post and you could try it on in the comfort of your own home. You could take photos and measurements and send it back.

Precious? How is OP being precious? If it was "I cba to travel two hours there" then yes, that's precious and ridiculous, but she has a legitimate reason for not being comfortable with travelling Confused

Moomin I was about to post the same, travel anxiety is absolutely horrible, if people haven't had it they really cannot understand why it's as big an issue as it is. I used to have to travel across country by train and quite often my Mum would have to drive to Stansted and other places to pick me up because my only other option to get home would include an hour or two on a replacement bus service and I'd start panicking at London Liverpool Street whilst waiting to get on.

OP I had a few sessions of hypnotherapy which helped a hell of a lot, more with the panicking than the actual issue but by reducing the panic I was able to work on the actual issue. I saw 5 doctors about it though and they were not interested, fobbed me off each time Hmm

IStopped that is a great idea, and one that would garner sympathy and understanding to get you through the journey.

Good luck op, but please make steps to overcome your anxiety, the freedom you will feel if you deal with this head on will be so liberating for you! Get to your GP and explore therapy techniques!
