To expect a 10 year old to manage a 15 minute walk

DD does an after school activity. I usually pick her up and walk her to it unless the weather is horrible in which case we get a taxi. Another girl in the year above also does the same activity and yesterday her mum asked if I'd be able to pick her up and take her with dd. I said that was fine but unless weather bad we'd be walking. Her mum said "Assumed you'd taje a taxi or drive, don't think she'd manage the walk I'll make other arrangements" and walked off.

The girl in question is in the school gym and net ball team so I've no reason to believe she has any physical problems.

AIBU to think mother was being rude and her dd could easily manage such a walk?

Yanbu.

MsVestibule · 10/03/2015 21:07

Of course a fit 10yo can manage a 15 minute walk! Her mum is being odd.

notnaice · 10/03/2015 21:07

Very strange indeed. Presumably she wasn't intending to offer you any money towards the taxi she thought you might be having.

BarbarianMum · 10/03/2015 21:07

YANBU but some people are like that. My mum had a similar reaction from a friend 35 years ago, when she suggested collecting some of us from Brownies on foot. We were 8 and it was a 10 min walk.

Mamafratelli · 10/03/2015 21:09

How bizarre. Some people are far too reliant on cars.

milkysmum · 10/03/2015 21:09

My 5 year old regularly walks the 20 minutes homes and enjoys it- you are not being unreasonable!

londonrach · 10/03/2015 21:11

15 mins if nothing! Is there a very busy road?

listsandbudgets · 10/03/2015 21:13

London there is one busy road but there is a pelican crossing which we always use

My DS has hypermobility and dyspraxia and he can manage a 15 minute walk. And he's 8.

So I'd imagine it would be a breeze for a 10year old with no mobility issues.

MrsCosmopilite · 10/03/2015 21:16

How strange. My four-year-old walks 30 minutes (1.1 miles) to the library, and then back again with me once a week.

The other mum is being ridiculous.

cheminotte · 10/03/2015 21:17

Yanbu - my 4 year old can walk 20 mins no problem.

Leeds2 · 10/03/2015 21:17

YANBU.

WeAllHaveWings · 10/03/2015 21:21

My ds runs about a football pitch for an hour and a half 4 times a week and allegedly struggles to walk far, its more boredom than anything else I think, but he is made to can do it. The mum is being a bit precious.

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 10/03/2015 21:21

Assuming no mobility issues, I'd expect a three year old to be able to walk that. By ten, I'd assume they could manage an hour long walk quite easily.

londonrach · 10/03/2015 21:22

(I sound like my mum)

2lol2lol · 10/03/2015 21:28

Most adults wouldn't walk that far. Maybe they should, but they don't as ordinary thing. It's probably as much a safety worry as anything.

TheFullGammon · 10/03/2015 21:29

Maybe she'd seen you get a taxi on a manky day and thought you were lying about the walking?

Of course YANBU that a 10 year old can walk it, but don't lose any sleep dissecting whether she was rude or not. Life is too short.

WorraLiberty · 10/03/2015 21:32

YANBU

Even in bad weather, a 15 minute walk is nothing.

FunkyPeacock · 10/03/2015 21:33

YANBU

Very odd!

eurochick · 10/03/2015 21:33

A safety worry?

CalleighDoodle · 10/03/2015 21:34

I dont think yabu but if the child had been doing a sporting activity and maybe has asthma the mother might think it too much???

2lol2lol · 10/03/2015 21:36

From what I read on MN, a surprising number of women are convinced that it's unsafe to walk down the road, especially after dark. Surprises me, too. And then there are people who think a mile is "really far" to walk.

I viewed an after school club for my dd. the only after school club that collects from her school. I decided against it (while my dps are still kind enough to collect!) because they walk the children to the hall. Its less than 10 mins but it is a walk along a very busy road and it is a narrow path. It also crosses a road thats a blind spot for drivers. For me it us just not a safe walk for a 5 yr old.
