Abdomen pain in 9 year old girl - sorry

kinkyfuckery · 10/03/2015 17:19

Posting here for traffic, sorry.

Sharp pain in left side of abdomen, sort of from belly button all the way round to back. Started this morning and comes and goes but has gotten progressively worse as day has gone on. Anything to worry about or just sit it out?

could she have a kidney infection?

Dawndonnaagain · 10/03/2015 17:23

Can she draw her knees up? Is the pain worse on touching?

Clutterbugsmum · 10/03/2015 17:24

Could it be hormonal. My dd1 has been having pains like you describe for a couple of years, starting about 9. I have had her checked out and thats the only thing the doctors could come up with.

kinkyfuckery · 10/03/2015 17:27

She says it doesn't hurt when she pees. She's sitting with her knees drawn up just now and seems to be fine in between pains, but taking her breath away when it strikes.
Clutter I had considered hormonal, but she's extremely low weight and most other stuff points towards no pre-puberty symptoms for now.

Sorry I'm just stressing, as this is my 9 year old who has ASD, and it's not easy to get the correct information out of her. I need to ask the right questions in the hope of getting the right answers.
Someone said appendicitis can refer pain to the left hand side? Is that possible?

OP posts:
Clutterbugsmum · 10/03/2015 17:33

Neither did my dd1, it's only been in the last 6 months I would say that you can see her body is changing shape. It's would last about 24 hours, Capol would not touch the pain only a hot water bottle would help. So about 18 months after the first time it happen.

Clutterbugsmum · 10/03/2015 17:34

So about 18 months after the first time it happen, she has started to change. Meant to add.

Dawndonnaagain · 10/03/2015 17:34

Appendicitis can refer to the left. Ask her to lie flat on her back and bring her knees up slowly. If that doesn't bother her too much, whip her to the doctor as an emergency. If it hurts when she pees, it's probably a urine infection. Try and get a sample from her before you go, clean jar. You don't need it full. Get it sorted tonight though, because urine infections can become kidney infections quite quickly.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 10/03/2015 17:35

Intermittent (colicky) pain on one side which radiates to the back COULD be a kidney stone. This would be very unusual in a healthy child with no pre existing kidney problems.
Try giving her a dose of Calpol and/or neurofen
If there is any blood in her urine take her to A&E
Is her temperature normal?
Any diarrhoea or vomiting?

LowLevelBlinging · 10/03/2015 17:36

please get her seen by a medic, just to rule out appendicitis amongst other things.

My appendix 'burst' inside me at her age and I had those kind of symptoms - pain when pressure removed and it started on the left and moved right.

Hope it's nothing OP, but best to be safe.

kbbeanie · 10/03/2015 17:38

Could be a kidney infection even without the obvious burning when peeing. i had a kidney infection that started like this and i didnt suspect it because i was peeing normal. Became more and more unwell vomitting high temps. Ended up seriously ill in hospital for a weel because id let it go on so long.

Appendicitis can cause pain to be referred or it will start around the middle of stomach and centre in on the right hand side...however it is excrutiating think lying on floor screaming and vomitting and it doesnt come and go would be there constantly

Lovelydiscusfish · 10/03/2015 17:40

I was thinking kidney stone. I first had one at around that age, and it presented much as you describe. Dr came out to see me, and called an ambulance to take me to hospital. Of course I was fine in the long run (though still get them every five years or so!) I would try to get her seen by a dr to be on the safe side.

MinceSpy · 10/03/2015 17:46

My son had kidney stones at 5, no previous history, healthy and no kidney problems. V painful but once passed they didn't return. I'd get him checked out.

kinkyfuckery · 10/03/2015 17:48

Thanks, waiting on nurse phoning me as surgery is still open until 6.

I have history of kidney stones, though she says it's more in her tummy than her back, but she winces and holds her breath when I push on her back too.

She's soooo difficult to pull information out of :( I'd feel much better if someone takes a look at her.

How about ringing 111 for advice?

miniavenger · 10/03/2015 18:04

GP is best bet. Have you taken her temp? How's eating/drinking?

icedgem30 · 10/03/2015 18:04

I felt the pain of my kidney stones more in my abdomen than in my back. I was vomiting and it was hideously painful.

Do you have an OOH you can go to?

BellsUpMyNose · 10/03/2015 18:08

could it be trapped wind that can be very painful

kinkyfuckery · 10/03/2015 18:35

Best I said I was waiting on call from the nurse - is there information that a call handler on 111 could give me that was better than a practice nurse?

She's not eating and reluctant to drink but I've managed to get her to have two cups of water since coming home from school.

The nurse advised to give paracetamol and if she's still in pain by 7.30/8 to call NHS 24. She says she thinks it is easing off a bit so will see

SlightlyJadedJack · 10/03/2015 18:45

Could it be costochondritis?

SlightlyJadedJack · 10/03/2015 18:47

My son had this but felt the pain under his ribs rather than in his ribs IYKWIM.

SlightlyJadedJack · 10/03/2015 18:48

And only on one side. Sorry for drip feed, I'm half asleep!

Goldmandra · 10/03/2015 18:51

You need to get her seen by a doctor and make it clear that she may not communicate her pain in typical manner.

My six year old DD was discharged from hospital twice with appendicitis, the second time after it has perforated because she didn't respond enough when she was examined. She was later diagnosed with AS.

She became very poorly and took a long time to recover.

If you're concerned, don't let anyone fob you off.

kinkyfuckery · 10/03/2015 18:55

That's been about an hour since paracetamol. She is saying that it's much better now. I guess time will tell when I try to put her to bed in an hour.

Thanks everyone

Was going to ask how long it has been since she last pooed? Thinking perhaps constipation... trapped wind can be excruciating, awful stabbing pain that you can't speak or breathe through. Hope she feels better soon
