AIBU to think pasta and sauce isn't a proper meal?

Everyone always goes on about how it's sooo easy and filling and nice but it has no protein; it isn't filling, it's just stodge with a bit of flavouring...I mean I'd eat it if I was hungry but AIBU to think it isn't really a proper, filling meal?

i think if you're doing your bachelors and another poster has a masters, the yep, they are above you in that sense

Must be infuriating for you not to grasp that, silly old housewive that you are! Tsk tsk, now where's your pinny there's dusting to do!

ouryve · 10/03/2015 11:54

This silly old neurotic housewife already has a Science degree. As, I'm sure, do many of the other silly old neurotic housewives here.

OH is a vegetarian, he has pasta and sauce as a meal.

If you saw how much pasta he had on the plate you would certainly consider it to be a meal!!

toffeeboffin · 10/03/2015 12:12

Woo hoo, a master's! You must be bright.

Thumbwitch · 10/03/2015 12:28

I don't think the OP has a Masters degree, toffee, if that's whom you are addressing. The OP is only just doing an undergrad "science" degree.

Last night's dinner was spaghetti with a sauce made of onion, white wine, garlic, king prawns, cream, broccoli and peas. It was gorgeous though I say it myself. And pretty filling too.

rioballinx · 10/03/2015 12:35

It is a meal but it wouldn't fill me up. I'd add some beans, meat or tuna in the sauce. But I'm a big believer in protein at every meal. Each to their own!

rioballinx · 10/03/2015 12:36

Italians traditionally eat a small bowl of pasta as a starter, then a piece of meat or fish as the main I believe (correct me if I'm wrong!)

Titsalinabumsquash · 10/03/2015 12:55

Aww, 8 year old DS2 has just made me a bowl of pasta and sauce with some olives and baby rocket stirred through for my birthday lunch...

I shall make sure I tell him that it's just not good enough and I'll now be starving in a couple of hours until someone with a masters can cook me a proper meal! .... Oh wait, no, I won't, we're all satisfied and it was lovely. GrinWink

Pasta is made from flour and eggs, both of which contain protein. If you grate some parmesan on the top of your sauce that's more protein. If you have a vegetable and tomato based sauce then you have all the food groups in 1 meal.
I'm not understanding why some people think pasta and a sauce isn't healthy or filling. You can have wholemeal pasta or spinach based pasta.
Many people just have portions that are too big. Have a smaller portion and have a side salad (I love rocket salad) with a nice dressing (I love raspberry vinegar with a nice olive oil shaken together). What's not to like?

mewkins · 10/03/2015 13:06

If you are vegetarian this is often teh default veggie option and you learn to put up with it! If you add lentils and other pulses it is better!

OnlyLovers · 10/03/2015 13:16

2rebecca, I've said this until I'm blue in the face but again: I personally find pasta less filling than some other foods.

I can't say why scientifically. I can't say that it's true for everyone. But if it's true for me might it not be true for some other people too?

And, while there's nothing not to like in a rocket side salad with a nice dressing, that won't fill me up either; I know this from experience.

2rebecca · 10/03/2015 13:19

Wow, you seem to take my comment very personally, it was a general comment not a personal reply to you.

OnlyLovers · 10/03/2015 13:34

No, I haven't taken it personally at all, am just engaging in the conversation and picking up on you not understanding why some people think pasta and a sauce isn't healthy or filling.

I am one of those 'some people' who experience this so I felt qualified to respond. It is a bit frustrating that other posters and I have posted more than once along the lines of 'It just doesn't fill me up' and then keep seeing responses like yours saying they don't understand this.

Only there are some things people can explain to me they experience till they are blue in the face, i will still never understand it (liking eastenders for one)

OnlyLovers · 10/03/2015 14:09

Grin I'm with you on EastEnders. I think 'pasta doesn't fill me up as much as other things' is less difficult to grasp though.

catlovingdoctor · 10/03/2015 21:50

Here bloody here OnlyLovers!

I find pasta less filling than lots of other foods, that's why I can pile a shed load of it in during one sitting Grin
