to be freaking out about threadworms

I'm 22 and have just caught my first case of threadworms. Yuckkkk! Got them after babysitting. Since I've never had them before I'm a bit freaked out, especially after reading horror stories about how people have them for years! (Should not Google in future!)

Anyone have any experiences?
How much cleaning is necessary to get rid?

TIA!

The first time is always the worst.

Dose and dose again a week or so later. Damp dust everywhere and clean all door handles, remotes, keyboards etc. Boil wash your knickers and wash your bedding on hot.

Don't worry about it, it happens. Let the mum know though so she can treat her kids if she hasn't already.

I keep a bottle of stuff in the cupboard. It seems to have got more frequent since they introduced those fingerprint things in schools.

Dragonfly71 · 07/03/2015 18:09

I have had them when the children were small. Dosed the whole family twice and made sure hygiene rules followed and they went straight away. Never boil washed anything but better safe than sorry I guess. Don't worry OP, they are no more than a minor irritation really like any other common infection. But Yanbu to be freaked out, it's a natural reaction to parasites. I have heard drinking lime juice helps but I would opt for something with a higher alcohol content myself Smile

Okay phewww glad to hear it! Washed everybody's bedding and towel, hoovered each bedroom, damp dusted all rooms except hallway and dining room so hopefully I should be good. My boyfriend and his family have to do the same thing too and are not too happy haha.

children's mum has been warned too.

When you had them did they itch in the day too? It's not constant but seems to be every now and then Confused

Yes, you can itch in the day. I always wondered how they knew it was night-time but read on MN that they can itch any time if you're sitting around for a while.

It's not the nicest, but easily dealt with.

yeah, I freaked out too. You are normal. They can be got rid of. DSs got them but rest of family didn't, still

Janethegirl · 07/03/2015 18:21

You can buy the medication in packs of 4 so you can treat everyone at the same time.
It's no different from worming cats, dogs etc

Ardha · 07/03/2015 18:24

My daughter had them a few months ago, luckily the pharmicist that sold me the tablets was sensible, I just washed things as normal" no mad cleaning went on, worms disappeRed

Thank you all for your replies! I feel much better knowing it's easily treatable. won't be able to relax until the buggers are gone though

you haven't necessarily got them fro your babysittee

maiscout · 07/03/2015 18:36

True. I could have caught them from anywhere. Just more likely to be from babysitting as I have no other contact with children, and the timing seems to fit.

Yanbu they are awful. My ds had them twice and passed them to me both times.
I discovered them at 10pm and was so freaked out I rung my ex (ds's dad) and he went to late night pharmacy for us all Blush. I was so itchy that night I hardly slept and sat in a cold bath! Next night not so itchy, next night they'd gone.
