To think you don't get presents for Easter?

I don't mean a little book, DVD, outfit or soft toy, for a baby too young for chocolate, a child who can't have chocolate for whatever reason or in addition to a small egg if parents don't want their child having too much chocolate.

I have just seen an increasing number of people buying their children £50+ worth of toys, trampolines, iPads, concert tickets etc, some even asking 'is this enough from the Easter bunny?!' I'm not even that old and I thought the Easter bunny brought Easter eggs, not that he had an inferiority complex from Santa Claus?

Have things really changed this much?

You get a chocolate egg. You don't get iPads from the Easter Bunny.

ZoomZoomToTheMoon · 06/03/2015 08:54

I'm OK with a small easter egg because it's not actually a huge amount of chocolate. It gets rationed to an extent, so they get to eat some for a snack/pudding but not to sit and eat the whole thing all at once.

Re valentine's day, DP and I usually give each other some chocolates so this year I did get the DC a small pack of sweets each so they didn't want our chocolate!

ArcheryAnnie · 06/03/2015 08:58

I don't mind buying choc eggs because most kids' easter eggs are between the £1 to £5 price range, and there isn't that much choc there.

Totality22 · 06/03/2015 08:58

£1 egg here (not to be opened and scoffed in one sitting either). DS is only 2 though.

I may get niece's and nephew's a little token choccie but we are big families and the kids can end up with silly amounts of chocolate? So I'm undecided this year. I definitely don't want anyone to buy DS any more eggs (or anything else for that matter)

I know I sound like a kill joy but my folks have 10 grandkids so with xmas and birthday's they already spend a fortune.

On another note I recall staying at a close friend's house in USA where it was Easter and her DDs (about 8 and 10 at the time) had been sent Easter outfits (think tulip bags, bright purple/yellow colours, matching dresses etc) had been sent by their Southern DGM (friend's MIL). The girls immediately cringed when they saw what had been sent (really not their taste, clothes wise) and said "Do we HAVE to wear that?!" It was amusing.

Idontseeanysontarans · 06/03/2015 10:07

Marylou I'm northern and we did an egg and new shoes for years too Smile
We just do eggs for the DC's here now and it's become a tradition to have a BBQ and an egg hunt at someone's house (our turn this year I think) on the Monday.
iPads and big things will not be bought!

TwinkieTwinkle · 06/03/2015 10:09

I get my son an Easter present, usually something like a new DS game, new scooter because his old one broke, skateboard etc. We have a massive family though so he ends up with literally enough eggs to do him until the next year. It's an insane amount. They never get finished. So it's just something from me that isn't yet more chocolate. The place we go on our Easter holiday also give out gift bags of Easter eggs to the kids, one of them would honestly be enough!

My mum does give me an Easter present though... Usually just the two of us going to get our hair done together. I'm a single parent so it's nice to get a wee treat Smile

ghostyslovesheep · 06/03/2015 10:42

we got new clothes (home made) for church and either a small egg and a toy (small stuffy etc) or a big egg

I get my kids a small egg and a gift because they get so much chocolate - MIL buys 3 eggs each!

We still have a box of Christmas chocolate to get through as it is.

we don't do the Easter bunny

shockedballoon · 06/03/2015 11:06

I decided to get DS presents last Easter and will do the same this year. He'll get a chocolate egg plus 2 reasonably priced toys (from the 'Easter bunny') and a new outfit from us. Then he'll get 1 egg and a small toy or book off grandparents. Much better than getting tonnes of overpriced chocolate that takes ages to get through.
We're not religious, though by circumstance DS does go to a CofE school, but I like joining in the tradition of marking the springtime and the cycle of the the year, themes of rebirth or whatever. A few little presents and a special family dinner/day out with egg-themed activities is all good fun and the presents are a nice little stop gap for DS who has birthday &xmas pretty close together.

Pengweng · 06/03/2015 11:14

We were always given new summer clothes from my Granny and a chocolate egg each. My mum has continued this tradition though it is normally shoes and a chocolate egg which i then hide and eat
We don't personally get them big presents but if people want and have the money then that's up to them. We do normally paint eggs and roll them down a hill and have a little egg hunt in the garden though which is much more fun for me than them haha

chrisrobin · 06/03/2015 11:20

My DC get Easter presents off us and their grandparents (my parents), just as I did when I was a child. They usually have a lego set or skylander off us. We are Christian and to us celebrating Easter is very important.

Fudgeface123 · 06/03/2015 11:44

DP's kids threw a shit fit last Easter as it was the first one where daddy didn't give them £50....each!

They are 22 and 23.

squoosh · 06/03/2015 11:44

Yes nothing says devout Christian like giving your child an Easter gift.

aphrodites · 06/03/2015 12:01

I've seen this only a few times but it makes cringe inwardly. I don't understand why every special occasion has to be turned into a gift giving bonanza. Is it something brought in from America? a friend of mine who lives over there seems to treat it as if it were second Christmas.

squoosh · 06/03/2015 12:11

I love Christmas but what I love best about Easter is that it's a nice family get together with some roast lamb, some wine, some chocolate and zero faff about presents and decorations.

PrincessOfChina · 06/03/2015 12:14

My grandparents always bought us a new spring/summer jacket for Easter as well as a small egg or tube of Mini Eggs.

When we got older we got £20 instead.

DD usually gets a bit of cash from relatives as well as eggs, or they may ask if she needs a new spring coat or some new summer clothes. It's almost like they're celebrating the turn of the season as much as anything.

We certainly don't buy her an Easter gift, although she's getting a new DB for Easter this year so suspect she may be spoiled!

MrsHathaway · 06/03/2015 12:26

We used to get a new smart outfit and a small amount of chocolate.

Some of the OP's things sound generous for Christmas!

worldsgonemade · 06/03/2015 12:35

I buy my dc a small gift each for easter, no more than £30 per child. This year they are all getting new scooters, my reasoning for this is one dd has allergies and can't eat chocolate or actually many sweets at all so feel this way is fairer in our house.

QueQuesto · 06/03/2015 12:41

I've got my DD a small egg and a few little presents like bunny hairclips, a paint your own egg cup kit and light up spinning plastic egg from the pound shop.

BeyondRepair · 06/03/2015 12:49

No one gets our dc eggs etc so its usually me.

however there is sooo much, this year I have decided to get some cheap and cheerful things from Lidl choc wise and give a small gift instead of loads of choclate.

This year they will get some ebay brought popo castle figures in their easter baskets.

BeyondRepair · 06/03/2015 12:49

TBH if I had seen this thread sooner i would have got them some scooters too.

browneyedgirl86 · 06/03/2015 12:53

I was just thinking similar this morning. The children in my extended family have been bought Easter presents in addition to eggs. I don't really understand it myself. But saying nothing as don't want to cause an arguement!

thatsucks · 06/03/2015 12:57

YANBU!!!

Cannot believe people do this. Thank God I've not come across it with my friends or family.

We didn't even buy ours easter eggs until they were about 10 because they got so many from relies.

Oh and we always end up secretly eating the kids' eggs obviously.

mewkins · 06/03/2015 12:58

We used to get easter presents insteas of an egg from our parents as kids. My mum tends to get dd a little gift now. Dd gets chocolate fatigue and we usually have a few eggs sitting on the shelf in June. I love Easter, egg hunts, egg related craft etc
