to think 14 degrees when your in a warm bed with electric blanket is fine

Sorry my dp is getting a pasting by me today...

Anyway in my old house this morning it was 14 degrees, but we weren't cold at all as had a thick wool dovet and an electric blanket. Was a bit nippy getting ready but I don't mind that, means I don't waste any time. I don't often use the oil boiler as it costs a lot and never really warms the place up. I have two log burners that I keep going so it was still 19 degrees in the lounge this morning.

Dp was saying it was too cold and not good for you. I have a dehumidifier constantly on so it is never damp.

Aibu to think this is just fine for a house?

I'd feel anything under 18 was too cold (and I'd personally prefer 21). With regard to the ice on the inside of the windows - people used to get their water from a pump in the street and have outside toilets too, and now we don't have to suffer through that anymore....

DidoTheDodo · 05/03/2015 16:37

But it's not suffering! I can't bear hot bedrooms and only suffer if I have to stay somewhere with a centrally heated bedroom.
Horses for courses.

(I've lived with outside toilets too, but wouldn't go back to that)

PeaStalks · 05/03/2015 16:40

12C isn't warm enough to be outdoors without a coat and scarf.
19C is not warm enough if you are sitting.
Unless you are so hard up as to be choosing between eating and heating I would say that keeping a home as cold as that is just miserly and miserable. Why do it? is there some perverse points scoring thing about how cold your house is? If you have to run a dehumidifier that must tell you it's too cold.

BertieBotts · 05/03/2015 18:25

Surely a dehumidifier is noisier and costlier than heating anyway!

Electric blankets are a fire risk. I'd never use one, though I love the idea. It just seems mad! Put wires inside flammable materials? Why?

JsOtherHalf · 05/03/2015 19:33

My asthma flares up under 20c, so that is what we have the thermostat at.

Flomple · 05/03/2015 20:05

Thinking about it I've never slept with an electric blanket but wouldn't anywhere feel freezing compared with being surrounded by duvet and electric heating? Like lukewarm water feels cold to a hand that's been in hot water.

Orangeanddemons · 05/03/2015 20:28

It it some sort of moral high ground? 14degrees is ok for sleeping in, but not for getting dressed in. That's why we have timers on central heating. Personally I wouldn't really go out without a coat at 14 degrees, so why would I choose to strip off completely to get dressed at that temperature?

Stratter5 · 05/03/2015 20:29

Sounds ok to me, but it's obviously not to your DH.

My heating is set to 16C, and goes off at 10pm. I was brought up in a cold, draughty old house - also remember ice in the loos and insides of windows. It's healthier imo, I don't think central heating is particularly good for you.

suzzieanneba46 · 05/03/2015 20:33

Lol no a dehumidifier is much much much much cheaper than oil central heating to help with damp

suzzieanneba46 · 05/03/2015 20:35

Totally agree that central heating isn't that good for you. God knows what the long term affect on us is. I grew up in a central heated modern house and used to find winters so cold, now not so much. I do like my wood burners though, they give off a very different heat

Our bedroom is usually about 23 in the winter.i couldn't function at 14 degrees.

It's usually about 18-19 in the morning before the heating goes back on.

You're not wrong - if bed is cozy then of course its fine. However, if your partner is not happy, then a compromise should be considered. These kinds of things can be very important to long term happiness, if you are going against your preference in the most extreme way. Nobody is right or wrong really, it is personal preference.

Sallystyle · 06/03/2015 21:26

We didn't have central heating growing up and I remember going to bed with layers on then running to the fire in the morning.

When I was about 15 we got electric heaters in our rooms but my mum could only afford to run them once a day. It wasn't pleasant but it didn't harm us.

I used to be extremely cold blooded before going on meds for my thyroid and I would have the heating on very high at night. I now have it on 17.
